MMO top-end oil: good or bad?
Here's a question for those members who have driven their Hudsons for a long time with experience on both unmolested, original motors as well as freshly re-built motors. Does Marvel Mystery Oil provide benefits under any circumstances OR is it best left for use in freshly re-built motors to prevent future valve and ring deposits?
My chief concern, if I've got this right, is putting the stuff in the fuel supply to an original, non-smoking motor to clean up sticky valve deposits, guides and finding out that it ALSO cleans up and frees the rings so effectively thus causing an oil consumption problem and/or loss of compression. You know what they say about a sleeping dog - does it apply here? Thanks. ArtS.

MMO- is good for everything. I have used it on my 1948 with orig engine and no problems. I do think it runs better. Use it in my 4 stroke dirt bike aswell. It is great stuff. Niels0

I used to have some occasional problems with my carb linkage freezing up internally after sitting for a few months. Some others have had this problem and say think that it was something in the fuel. I started mixing a little MMO in with my gas, and it has never happened since. I can't say that it cured the problem, but I can't say that it didn't! I bought an AMC engine that had been rebuilt and was sitting for quite some time. The gentleman that I bought it from would dump MMO down the intake manifold every once in awhile. Long story short- I had to tear the heads off of it because the MMO had gunked up the valves. It also bled right through the head gaskets! I will say that it definately penetrates! I think that MMO is good for many things, just not everything.....My Opinion Only.....0

The old adage "If it aint broke, don't fix it" stands. If you have a perfectly functioning engine, burning no oil, and not knocking, it doesn't need anything else than the oil that is in the sump. There used to be a product in Australia marketed as Redex upper cylinder lubricant. You bought a shot for every tankful, for an extra dollar. Probably did no harm, but did nothing else either! You will get enthusiasts who will swear by one product or another, but little can be proved scientifically. One company here made millions by marketing an in-line device to add tin to the fuel, right after the lead was removed from fuel. sold thousands of them at several hundred dollars each. First scientific test performed on the device proved it didn't work, but those who forked out for them still swear by them! Bit like the fellow who tears his newspaper into strips and spreads them over the lawn to keep the elephants off - he has never had an elephant on his lawn!

I use it regularly in my gas. The 3x5 ("splasher" 212 cid) engines had poor oil delivery to the valve stems and as a result the valves tended to stick open if the engine was idle for a long period ("long" meaning months, not hours!).
Incidentally, in this neck of the woods (Washington, D.C. area) two old fellows operated a Hudson repair garage for decades in our nation's capital. They are reputed to have maintain a 50 gallon drum of M.M.O. in their shop. I am unable to grasp the deeper meaning of this, other than they trusted the stuff and used quantities of it in the cars they repaired!0 -
I've used MMO on engines that have sat for a long time, once on a Chevy 216 that had not been started in 22 years! Poured some in each plug hole, let it sit for a couple of days, rotate the engine, let it sit for another day or so, put the plugs in and the starter turned it over and it started as soon as it got fuel! After 22 years! Yeah, I use it, you bet!0
