Hello I am new to this site
I have a 1933 Essex Terreplane 5 window coupe, and I am wondering just how rare or not rare this car is. It is a six cylinder not an eight and it is a long way off of running, I think most of the parts are there for it. I have been reading as much as I can find about this car and I really haven't found all that much about them. Can anyone out there in Hudson land tell me what I have?

If you're looking for production numbers for the '33 coupe as opposed to the other body styles, I'm afraid you're out of luck. Those don't exist. The total production run for the 1933 Terraplanes was 38,150 passenger cars and 430 "commercial cars" (trucks).
As to how many survivors there are, there is also no way to know. Best bet would be to contact the Club's registrar for the 1933 models to find out how many people have bothered to register their '33 Terraplanes with him.
Of course your car is a lot rarer than (say) a '33 Ford or Chevy!
If you want to ask any specific questions about this car I am sure someone will step forward to try to answer them.0 -

Hi, and welcome to the forum. If you're not a member of the Hudson Essex Terraplane (HET) club, I recommend joining. It's a great place for networking with people who have parts and info about your car. It's worth the price just for the award winning club magazine. Please post some pictures of your car. We love pictures. Email Sam Jackson at fortyqtpi@earthlink.net. He's our editor and can send you a copy of the club magazine. Good luck with your project.

Thank you everyone, the pictures are great, I was having a hard time finding pictures of the coupes I will look up the book too any thing that I can get on this car will go a long way ... This car was my fathers but he died a few years ago and it is being passed on to me.
I can only ever restore it to its former glory I am not allowed to turn it in to a hot rod of any sort ( not that I would ) when my dad bought the car back in the 60's he was into race car driving and the farmer he bought it off of said he would only sell it if my dad promised not to cut it up and make it into a race car. I'm only 37 years old so this car is a little before my time and my dad never really found much out about it. So with the internet and helpful people out there I hope to get it on the road one day .... Thanx again everyone for your help and comments.0 -
Glad to hear you'll keep it original. Even as a "stock" car it would be more turn more heads than a hotrod, I think. Restoration of these things isn't that hard when you've plugged into a support group like the H-E-T Club. For example, every member gets a membership roster showing members and their cars, so you can determine who has a car similar to yours, nearby. Usually these people are happy to let you look over their car, and in this way you can answer a lot of your questions. Often these car owners work on their own cars so they'll have ideas on how to restore, where to find parts, interchanges with other cars, and so forth.
You may just want to get your car running and driving first, so you can enjoy it. Then worry about restoring it cosmetically later. A lot of us are driving cars that would never win any trophies at a car show, but we are having fun with them. (The H-E-T Club, as you may know, has always had a policy of giving no trophies for best-restored car, in order to foster a spirit of cooperation between its members.)
Do come to the Forum often, with your questions, and we'll try to help. Better yet, get out to a Hudson meet near you. There are chapters all over the country, so even if you can't make it to a National or Regional meet, you may have the opportunity to meet some nice fellow Hudson owners at a backyard barbecue, tech session, or car show. My advice would be to go to the list of chapters (on the Club website) and find a contact person for the chapter nearest you, then call him or her, and find out when and where the next local get-together takes place. They go on all year (for example our local club is having a mid-winter get together at a restoration shop this coming Saturday.)0 -
I thought the 33 were the rarest year of them all
especially the coupes

Ok so I haven't bought the book yet but I do have it ordered at the local book store.. I am hoping it will answer most of my questions .. One question I have is : was 1933 a full year of production for the Essex cars ? I was told that Essex only produced cars till march of that year.
Thank-you everyone for the great pictures and information regarding this car there is so much I don't know about it and every little bit helps. Thank-you.0 -
