51 8-cylinder engine possibly for sale
My uncle is getting rid of some of his Hudson stuff. I may be getting rid of some of mine, too. He has the engine from a Commodore Eight that he used to own that he is thinking of selling. He pulled it out years ago with the intention of re-ringing it but put a 308 in the car. It is complete but partially disassembled. He said that the bores are fairly good and will clean up with a hone or slight overbore. I take it that the bearings weren't noisy or he wouldn't have been thinking to re-ring it but you never know. I think he has an incomplete set of bearings for it but don't know the details. It has an iron head. Is anybody interested in this, and what would be a fair price? If somebody wants it I will go under the house and make sure the condition is OK.

where is this engine located?
have an idea of what you want for it?
I'll put it on the Hudson 8 Yahoo website for you.0 -
We are in Baltimore. I told him I thought that if it was any good it would be worth $500 but I don't dabble in the splashers, so I don't really know. What do you think?0

A little steep not running and in questionable condition.
In my experience with unknown splashers, ya gotta tear em down to the mains and check everything.
The eight I'm working on now was running,...24 years ago. It was badly stuck, 2 broken piston lands, stuck rings in several of the rest, camshaft washer totally missing, unusable water jacket, with 5 broken bolts and a broken tap in one hole, a broken lifter sleeve, a camshaft lobe worn by 1/2, a clutch disk without any (as in NONE) corks, a tight water pump, a mouse-nest the size of a soccerball, 3 dead mice, all the oil in the pan jelled..wouldn't even run out, a worn-out cam gear and I'm not done yet.
On the plus side, the rods and mains are ok, only needing removal of .006 from the main shim pack, and the valves were not stuck and only needed a light lapping, and the lifters are in good shape. and all the head studs are OK, and none of the manifold studs broke, (unlike the last two.) And we were in hopes of just firing this up and running it.
In addition, we've got $800 in new and rebuilt parts, and 25 hours in it so far, and it's the 3rd one in 3 years so it's not like I'm on a learning curve. The last eight, had 3 bad mains and a broken piston as well...and it was running.
Your engine might fire up and run for a long time. I hope so, but I would 'do the drill' before I used it.0 -
have to agree with Uncle Josh.0

Ok, that does not surprise me and thanks for the input. Would anybody like to take a stab at a reasonable price? I think he would entertain any fair offer. Thanks.0
