1936 Hudson trunk shelves

I am reproducing the trunk shelves for 1936 hudsons using a copy that I made 40 years ago from an original. Unfortunately, the original shelf barely held together to allow me to copy it. It fell apart from rotting (the trunk lid had leaked water onto it for a long time). Call me or e-mail if you are interested in one.

The shelf is made of 1/2" oak plywood. The bolts, nuts, washers and lock washers used to hold the shelf to its supports are stainless steel. The metal angles are handmade 1/8" aluminum brackets. The wood is finished with Olympic Maximum waterproof sealant.

My phone number is 607-334-2358. I also have a listing for a shelf on e-bay. Just search for 'hudson 1936 trunk'.

This is a worthwhile project, since so many of those shelves (in the late thirties cars) are damaged or deteriorated.

Which body style does this fit?

Had you considered making this project open-ended, so that -- if someone was interested three years from now -- you could sell them a shelf whenever you got the time to make one? I can guarantee you that there are folks in the Hudson Club who won't see this 'cause it's not in the WTN, and they'll be interested when word gets around.

As you may know, I maintain a Hudson Repro Page http://www.detailedconcepts.net/Repro_Table.pdf and would be happy to list your shelf there (no charge of course) so long as I know that it will continue to be available in the future.

This shelf fits a model 67 with a bustle trunk lid. I am not an expert on the various other models of 36's so I cannot say what other models this shelf will fit.

You can go ahead and list me in your pdf files. I will be able to make a shelf at anytime. It takes about a week to complete if I don't rush it. Maybe, 2 days if I decide to hurry it. The only restriction on time is the drying of the wood finish. I have 1 copy (see photos) that is complete. I have another shelf that needs very little work to complete. The not shown shelf has the aluminum brackets and the edging wood piece painted flat black.

Thanks! If you could please furnish me with your name, mailing address and e-mail, I could insert that into your listing in my Repro webpage.

If you like, you can e-mail this information directly to me at xxxdetailed@verizon.net (remove the X's before sending!).

Perhaps someone could research the original part number (in the Hudson parts book) because this might fit other years and body styles. (One never knows, does one?) It's possible it fits (for example) the brougham ("coach") 2-door sedan with bustle back, though I'd guess it does not work with the coupe, especially the coupe with rumbleseat. I would also guess it does not fit the 4-door with the standard straight trunk lid.
  • Wow, that really looks nice. Make me wish I had a 36 so I could use one. RD
  • I have the Hudson Interchangeability Record manual and tried to find the shelf by reading the descriptions; but, I could not locate any reference to the trunk shelf in the 1936 section so far. I was assured by a friend that this shelf will fit the non-bustle trunk.

I have a Master Body Parts Group Book that covers 1930 to 1936 and could not find the shelf listed either. Almost makes you wonder if it was an aftermarket product.

Just for fun, Ed., look in the "rear compartment" section of your parts book, and try "rear compartment floor board". This might be the "shelf". They list all sorts of parts to fit it, like risers, brackets, "loops" (the "coachmen's loop" which is the chrome-plated bracket that holds the luggage straps). In the 1937 parts book they list one floorboard for "trunk models" (120624) and one for "without trunk" models (120621). The "trunk" meaning the bustle trunk lid.

Hudson lists a separate floorboard number for the coupe and convertible models (122301), but the floorboard for the sedan, coach and utility coach all have the same part number -- so long as they shared the same trunk lid!

Just looked through the 1938 body parts book (see http://hetclub.org/burr/manuals/1938_hudson-terraplane_parts_book.pdf ) and as I suspected, Hudson referred to the "shelf" as a "floor board" -- see page 145 for an illustration. The code number that points to the shelf in the photo, appears in the "floor board" section of the parts number pages. So once again, if looking through Hudson parts manuals, look for the term "rear compartment floor board" when looking for a shelf part number.

Very interesting. My group parts book for 1930 to 1936 lists 2 "Compartment Trunk Floor Boards" for 1936 with a front and rear listed(?). Their part#'s are 117207 and 117208 respectively. Now, those 2 part#'s are not listed in the Interchange manual as well as the 2 part#'s you listed for 1937. Instead, there are part#'s 120622 and 120623 for 1937 RH and LH model's rear compartment floor board risers.
Most confusing. It would be nice if they had some pictures/drawings showing the parts. (My group parts book has a picture of the trunk for 1935; but, none for 1936.)

Does anyone else have any ideas?

An FYI: The coachmen loops you refer to are also called footmen loops. I had a hard time finding them on the internet as I did not know what they were called. I was lucky and found a company that was selling a lot of straps and brackets and I recognized the loops on their website. Their loops (which I used on the new shelves) are 1.5" in length whereas the original shelf had 1.25" long loops.

I looked at Plate 33 in http://hetclub.org/burr/manuals/1938_hudson-terraplane_parts_book.pdf and observed that the rear compartment floorboard (aka trunk shelf) looks exactly like the shelf that I am reproducing. This is encouraging as it could mean that Hudson may have used the same trunk shelves for 1936, 1937(?) and 1938. The part#'s for the trunk shelf are not listed in the Hudson Interchange record.

If anyone has an original trunk shelf for 1937 or 1938, could you take measurements of it and post them here? My shelves are 45 inches X 27 3/4 inches. The trunk shelf supports (aka rear compartment floorboard risers) are 24 inches long for the left and 21 inches long for the right one. Both are 7.5 inches high.
