What is the factory firing position of the distributor rotor on a 308 for cyl number one ? Is it 3'O clock ?
P.S. oil pump alignment tool is almost ready to go. Will post it soon. Gert Kristiansen

No, it's not. About 11 o'clock as I recall0

Well, I've heard 1 o'clock. Curiously, the manual doesn't address it. It just refers to the #1 position, both in the installation of the pump, and the distributor.
Actually, it's wherever you want it to be, as long as it's wired from wherever the rotor is pointing, to #1 when it's at TDC in the firing position, and you follow around with 1,5,3,6,2,4, or 1,6,2,5,8,3,7,4
My Hornet happens to be at 7 o'clock, because I got twisted when installing the pump, trying to get it at 1 o'clock. She runs fine.0 -
Good question Gert. Had to check my engines. All three of my 308's are at the 1 o'clock position.
I agree with Uncle Josh's wireing explantion if the rotor positon happens to be somewhere else besides 1 o'clock when #1 cyl fires.
Have a good day

PS My High School friends couldn't understand how my Chevy V8 ran because the wires were not positioned in the distributor cap according to picture in Chevy manual. Did it on purpose to mess with their minds. The car guys figured it out.0 -
Thanks for the info. The Shop Manual is almost
quiet, except if you microscopically check the wiring
diagram at Section 6-12 at the distrib it may be
pointing at 3 O'clock. But like you say it doesn't matter
as long as it is wired right. Gert0 -
Hello Gert,
You got me to searching in the Procedure Manual. Look at picture on page 6-22. Looks like #1 is at 2 o'clock.
What do you anticipate the price will be on the distributor tool?
Have a good evening.

My original '51 Mech procedure manual shows #1 at 2 o'clock.0

Gert, you had me curious too. Mine is at 3 o'clock.0

It doesn't matter a fig really where the position is, unless you are a purist who insists on having it factory correct.0
