  • Go with the 15w-40 and stay with it. You should add an oil filter if you do not have one on the engine. Walt.

is this what you suggest for any big 6 hudson? ive heard 30w, 10w40, and now 15w40. im confused. i used 30 then started using 10w40 castrol and saw an improvemnt in perfrmance.

As much as I know Castrol 10/40 is semi - synthetic while most 15/40s are still 100% mineral oil... which many consider the better choice for old engines. Castrol even produces a full mineral "Classic 20/50" with extra mild additives for older engines. At a premium price, though.

  • I was thinking of adding an oil filter to my -39 212" engine, but then i realized that i maybe shouldn't do that. Because of the low-pressure pump. Could this be a danger on the older hudson engines? Right now i run a SAE30 oil, and instead of a filter i'm keeping a close eye on the oil's health and changing when needed. And when changing the oil i drop the pan and clean it too, because of the lack of filter. I'm thinking for myself that this is the better way to do it on an old engine with the low-pressure pump, so i don't loose all of the lubrication. But i have an old cadillac filter that mounts on the external oil line. Maybe its a good idea to use this filter anyway?

The enginge has been running for 72 years this way without a problem, so either it runs for at least 72 more years, or the doomsday for the engine is knocking on the door soon.
