Most 12 volt cars use an ignition resistor to the coil ,
but some 6 volt cars do also. This the symtom when the resistor goes open.
Check a wiring diagrahm.

I should have mentioned trying to hot wire it from battery to coil. Still won't start. Wondering if it might be the starter switch. ,if it allows voltage to coil when released. It was starting great. Only have wire diagram for ammbasador, not statesman. Will have to dig one up.0
