I just got back from Daytona and I thought I would a few pics of the Hudson Items I found on my visit.
The Plaques are located on the boardwalk just north of the pier and there is a plaque for each year commemorating the highlights.

The Car was located outside the track by the turn four grandstands.

Was that really a repro Herb Thomas car, or Jack Miller's original?

Did you find anything to do with Daytona Speed Weeks which was run on the same beach stretch up through 1961? NASCAR seems to have forgotten about these races /records when you talk to their historians.
  • 1958 was the last race on the beach. 1959 was the first race at Daytona race track. I was there for both of them. Walt.

Did you notice Tim Flocks win was disqualified because of installing a wooden roll bar in his car? I wonder if it was made of balsa wood to save weight.

The last Daytona Speed Week on the sand of the beach was 1961. Speed Week included events like Standing Mile and Flying Mile. Yes, the paved oval speedway opened in 1959 but the beach events continued through 1961.

For example, here is Andy Granatelli in a 1960 Chrysler 300F obviously running on the Daytona sandy beach and this was after he bought the used race car from Chrysler, added dual Paxton superchargers and brought it back on February 18, 1961 to run a flying mile of 179.427 mph, the fastest time that was ever recorded by a stock bodied car at that venue.
