1950 Hudson Transmission Overhaul

Need small parts kit to overhaul 1950 Hudson 3spd trans.
Need same for attached Borg Warner OD

Local Hudson guy is overhauling a 1950 Hudson transmission looking for a source for these parts. I have already contacted Al Saffrahn, and he does not know of a source.

Anyone have suggestions?

Were the 1951 and earlier standard transmissions produced by Hudson or did they farm them out? If farmed out who was the vendor? I know the 1952 and later versions are T-86 variants and that makes parts hunting easier.

Thanks for any assistance.

The 1951 and earlier transmission was build by Hudson. For parts try Northwest Transmission Parts.

For the Borg Warner Overdrive, Studebaker International has the parts.

If you cannot find a source of parts for the transmission, you will need to disassemble the transmission to see what it needs. Seals and ball bearings are available. Bushings and shafts can be made by a machine shop. Gaskets can be hand made. Gears and synchronizer assembly will have to be got from a parts transmission.

For the OD parts check out vanpeltsales.com. They advertise as Ford OD parts suppliers, but most internal parts are same as the Hudson R-10 versions. And they're soon to offer new 6v and 12v OD solenoids!
  • After sitting for a while, my gear box only needed the seals and gaskets. i ordered them from Al in March 2009.

Is he not selling them anymore?

I also paid a local transmission shop to do the cleaning and reassembly. They only charged me $125.

I checked with Al first, he does not have the small parts kits needed to complete the overhaul. Thanks

Thanks Doug, I gave your telephone number to ART yesterday as a potential source for parts.
