37 Terraplane kingpins
Hi folks
I'm Alan Wesson, the Brit guy who has the ex-Duke Marley 37 Terraplane in almost all-original condition. I haven't checked in for ages, but this has been because of a lack of time rather than a lack of enthusiasm! The Terraplane has been tucked up for the winter, but as the salt trucks gradually fade away I am getting ready for the road, and today we did a suspension once-over and found the kingpins have play in them. We knew they had a bit, but it is getting more noticeable so it is time to renew them. My question is - will 36 ones fit? There is a set on eBay and they are described as being up to 36, but I thought 37s were the same as 36s??? It may be that these were made in 36 and are just labelled like that because 37 hadn't happened yet - but I don't want to buy them and then find they are wrong, because with shipping and taxes they would cost me over $250.
Also, if these aren't right, can anyone suggest where I could get a set? It is honestly true to say that apart from the engine rebuild when we brought the car in, it has needed almost no new parts - and so I am not sure where to look! I was wondering about Doug Wildrick, but maybe he is only engine stuff??

No, '36 pins are too small in diameter. '34-'36 pins are the same, and from '37 thru '55 the pins are all interchangeable,(apart from Jet) except that the key groove I believe is in a different position on the Step-downs. Not a difficult thing to grind a new groove. I stand to be corrected on this, but definitely the pins and bushings are the same.

Unless you're in a terrific rush to get the kingpins installed, I'd hold off paying $200 for a set. I think you can get them much cheaper.0

Hi Alan ... Doug has lots of parts other than engine stuff, but most of it is good used, not new. I agree a bit more searching could come up with some. I'll email you if I find a good source. And Doug may have a source for such parts for his own repair jobs ... ask him.0

Auto Parts Obsolete offers them for 49.99. It is NOS part. Egge and Kanter sell kingpins too for lots more money.

Jeoff,36-37 -38 and 39 are the same. 1940 to 1947 are different as they are shorter and only take 6 balls at the top. 1948 to 1954 are longer and take 7 balls at the top. You have 3 different sets here. 1955 have no king pins. Walt.0

I have to disagree with Walt. Parts catalog (and my experience) lists same king pins used '32 thru '36 all models, part #42144. Then all '37 thru '39 models use pin # 154440. '55 Hornet and Wasp used same king pins as Step Downs. I have worked on these.

Hi everyone
Thanks for the info - much appreciated. I am not panicking anyway, as the inspection isn't due till July, but it would just be nice to do it in the last few weeks while I am not using the car. And thanks also Gert for your offer - I have sent you a separate email!
And glad to be back on the forum - I shall try to post more this year, I really will!
