the speedo cable end that was on my 53 car has the bracket and a square spline like a latter model cable, but is recessed inside quite a ways. the tranny i have is out of a 52 hornet and the tranny was plugged off and speedo cable was unhooked when i got it. i took the plug out and i see a worm gear inside a couple of inches in. this cable would need something else for the worm gear to drive it. is the cable broken off or just missing a part? i looked in the manual but couldn't find any info except the worm gear in the tranny setion. thanks for any info i don't have a complete car to look at.

Looks like you need a pinion like the pic here. Which one? Parouse Alex's online data. A sample of it here. Access through HET homepage etc.

Exactly - you are missing the gear on the end . The chart Josh mentions shows you the right one depending on model.

thank you both. looks like i need both the gear and the pinion. the part numbers for pinion are same for both my engine year and car year and model, but i need to see what rear end ratio is to see which gear i need to give correct speed. i an running 215 75 15's so that narrows it down to 2. i will prob have to take whatever i can find and not bee too pickey if the speed is off that will be ok.
so does the collet looking end have a square hole for the cable to go in? does any thing retain it in the worm gear or speedo cable? or because it can't go anywhere does it just slide in and sit there. sorry for all the questions, like i said, don't have anything complete to look at.0 -
You just need the pinion. The gear is the worm lookin thing inside the tranny. The pinion goes in the big end of the speedo sheath and has a square hole for the cable. Just sits and spins.0

thanks for the links and all the info. i finally found out the rear axle is 4.09, so it looks like i need the 15 tooth one since i am using 215 75 15 tires. so this is the higher geared rear right, if i am thinking about it correctly?0

got my pinion in the mail and got the speedo going today. i don't know if you can tell by the picture but the cable had been laying on the ground for years before i got it and was rusted inside on the tranny end. i took the cable out of the sheath and lubed it with some napa graphite speedo cable lube. i actually had to drill and finish ream the tranny end out because of the corrosion and dirt. it turned out real smooth when the pinion was installed i could turn the speedo up to 10 mph by hand and it had very smooth needle action. thanks for all the help. Glad to hear you got speedometer working again. Will you be takeing your car to speedo shop to check for accuracy? It will be interesting to find out the result.
When I took my 52 in for speedometer accuracy test, it was reading to fast by 9%. Yet the odometer was dead on accurate.
Have a good day

i doubt i will get it tested, might follow someone in the family and talk on the cell phone to them to check several speeds- you know the hillbilly accuracy test. i am not all that concerned about it being that dead on. just having it working as best i can is good enough for me. this car needs so much work the speedo was not a top priority but i want to fix what i can, as i go along. some of these easy things give my brain a rest from the hard stuff. soon i need to start rewiring and a little floorboard welding.0

Thats the way you do though to keep from getting overcome. Break it down into small tasks . And sooner than you think the whole car will be working,

thought i would post a picture of the car for fun. since i got the hudson engine and tranny in it it actually is starting to look like a drivable car! i worked on a small patch piece for the floorboard and an waiting on something for the back axle.0
