Side view mirror installation - '53 Hornet

I'm getting tired of not having side view mirrors on my '53 Hornet.
I know that they weren't standard on these cars, but were available as an option, and it seems like they're not too hard to find.

However, looking at the door and frame, I'm not sure how the mirrors were installed.
Do they need specific mounting hardware? Do the doors need to be modified? Are the mirrors simply glued on?
Thanks for any help.

  • My 51 had them both sides, screwed on with sheet metal fasteners. One thing, when you put them on, make sure they do not interfere with opening of the vent wings. Mine did and once hole are drilled, you're scr**ed!

Mine had the Hudson mirrors, however one was busted. Other one broke taking it off. I guess the originals are scarce, and the aftermarket set I got did not have enough adjustment in the head to get the drivers where I wanted it. There was no way the passenger mirror was going to be any use at all - except to see the stars maybe. I got a old aftermarket one off ebay, probably 60's vintage. But its pretty neat with lots of adjustment. However, I don't think it would be any good on the passenger side in the same spot though, A pillar/vent window in the way.

That's where my OE ones were mounted, for what it's worth.
