Please be specific: you are looking for the long, chromed hood hinge that holds the two hood halves together?

Guys, is the 36 the same as the 37?
Richard has one he bought for his 36 that he would sell me--
  • Hi - Several years ago I tried to use the the Mack center piece on my '37 Hudson and it wouldn't work (not quite wide enough). I don't know if the Terraplane piece is different in width. At the time I told the Mack piece would work on earkier H and Ts, but not the '37s. norm

The MG connection is an interesting possibility. Someone could check that out in three ways:

    1. Contact this company: http://www.abingdonsparesllc.com/catpg41detail.html . See "13" in the illustration: "41 013, Center Chrome Hood Hinge". Describe your hood hinge to them, maybe even send a cross-section (use one end of the strip as a "rubber stamp": ink it with a stamp pad, then print the impression on a piece of paper and mail, fax or digitize it, and send to the company). Be sure to get the exact length of the strip they sell. Even so, it lists for $166! So you might Google around to find a cheaper one.

Also try #453-050 at Moss Motors http://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=32854 or Little British Car Company http://www.lbcarco.com/parts/hood-stripchrome-453-050.htm --NOTE: this is chrome plated brass, so not as strong as stainless.

Brown & Gammons apparently sells one quite cheaply http://www.ukmgparts.com/product.aspx?CID=fa7d90fa-a5e3-4200-8ef2-bfe88a81db74&SID=134e8587-5c78-429b-a934-968ef9915e65&PID=2f10d4a9-ec0c-455b-8f77-4805d77a1bae except that the shipping charges may eat up the price advantage: they're north of London, England.

    2. Contact your local British car garage. Every large metropolitan area (and some small ones) have one of these. There's a possibility they might have an old MG in for service or restoration and the hinge strip might actually be laying around, for comparison. Who knows? They might have a used one for sale, or know of an interchange with a more popular vehicle. (If Fords or Chevy's used them in the 30's, then someone may be offering a repro that's not too expensive.)

    3. Maybe one of our fellow Hudson enthusiasts at the Railton Owners Club can enlighten you on the MG / Hudson hood hinge connection: http://railton.org/contact-us . Some Railton owners may also have a Hudson as well, and have discovered an interchange for the hinge, that's readily available in England.

Check it out! And please get back to us when you find out, this info would be helpful to a lot of people with '36-37 Hudson products.

I guess that Norm's experience with the Mack Truck piece settles it? It works on the '36 but not '37! I bought my piece from Bill Albright for my '36T after I temporarily "lost" the original during the 6 year long resto. I found my piece, so I never used the Mack Truck piece. It is long engough to work on both the 1936 Hudson or Terraplane. Let me know if anyone is interested who has a '36.

FYI the Mack part number is. 4QM12 P23. The package says Hinge 11/4/97.
  • Anyone needing a center hinge might contact Lew Bird, club member in Texas. If you use Mack parts make sure it is for early Macks (1933-34) as 1936-37 hinges won't work.
