Starter Differences
I was wondering if there are any major physical differences in stepdown starters over the years. I know there is a different starter for the automatic trans vs. the manual. I think this is required for nose clearance as much as anything.
Specifically, does anyone know if the dimension between the rear engine plate (mounting surface) and the flywheel (starter drive gear) changed at all between the different years/models?
Thanks for the knowledge.

Any automatic starter will work on 51-54. The 55/56 starter had a different aluminum bellhousing and a different flywheel, starter had a shorter nose. They were also 12 Volt. Could take the "guts" out of a 55/56 and put them into a 51-54 to have 12 volt as an option.0

I think the '50 PAcemaker Starter is a little different too and shares a starter size with the Jet. Can anyone verify this ?0

I have a 6 volt automatic Jet starter on a 308 Hydra-Matic 12 Volt system. I put it on just to test while I rebuilt the "real" one. Works so good, I left it there. Don't know about the 50 Pacemaker, but I wouldn't be surprised.0

I think the Pacemaker has a smaller starter for the 232, but it can be swapped with the larger 262/ 308 type. It is a weaker (cheaper) started, but otherwise the same.

1955 Hudson's are still 6 volt. Hudson did not adopt 12 volt until 1956.0
