What needs to be changed to put a Hash 308 in a 49? Oilpan? Linkage? Manifolds? Crank flange? Also want to know the differences between wide and narrow blocks? What interchanges and what doesn't? Is this info already available somewhere? Thanks

  • START BY CHANGING THE FRONT AND REAR MOUNT PLATES FROM YOUR OLD STEPDOWN ENGINE. YOU NEED THE FRONT TO FIT MOTOR MOUNT STANDS AND THE REAR TO MOUNT YOUR STARTER. IF YOU HAVE AN AUTOMATIC, YOU WILL NEED A SPACE AS THE HASH CRANK IS ABOUT 7/16 INCHES SHORTER THAN THE STEPDOWNIF YOU USE THE HASH EXH MANIFOLD YOU WILL HAVE TO CHANGE YOUR HEADPIPE FLANGE 180 DEGREES TO FIT THE MANIFOLD., FABRICATE THROTTLE LINKAGE AS NEEDED FOR MORE INFO EMAIL ME AT albrighthudsons@msn.com

You also need to use earlier oil pan.
  • Narrow head stepdown blocks were produced from 1948-1950. The difference came in the 1951 model year as the cooling cavities around the cylinders was increased to better cool the engines on new production. Many parts will interchange with earlier stepdown blocks but one of the most obvious non-interchanging parts is the head and head gasket. The width added was about 1-11/2 "approx. This change however was only made to fully oil pressured engines. The 8 cyl engines stayed the same until the 1952 model year when they were finally discontinued.

Do you mean one and one half inches. Would the motor plates and oilpan from a narrow block work or would I need 308 stepdown donor engine as well?

Yes they should be the same. I think the head and head gasket are the only changes.

Are the engine numbers on hash motors stamped in a different place? Looked at two center sump 308's (according to the heads) one single carb and one twin H and didn't find any numbers in the usual place. The motor mounts were at an angle so I assume they are 55-7s.
