My Years at Hudson, by Bernie Siegfried
While looking through my old WTN I found the 2 part article written by Bernie Siegfried about his days at Hudson and the engineering activities. This is probably one of the best articles ever in the WTN since it covers the "neat" inside stuff at Hudson such as their development of a V12, the 7X, a super Straight Eight that could run away from the Hornet 6, and many other stories. If any one would like a copy I can scan it as a pdf and send it to you. This was in the May/June and July/August '87 WTN.
BTW I wrote Bernie a letter shortly after his articles published about how I could "hop-up" my C8. If I can find it I will include it in the scan.
Also, Bernie passed away some years ago and to those that knew him (unfortunately I did only from his one letter) he was a hellva a guy and knew his stuff!

Great articles! However, even the gurus get it wrong sometimes! The pinned rings didn't happen until the 3" bore Terraplanes in 1934. The original Essex 6 started out as a 2-5/8" bore, increased to 2-11/16, then 2-3/4" in '29 and '30; 2-7/8" in '31, and 2-15/16" in '33, and finally, all engines were 3" in '34, with triple siamesed bores, shich caused all the distortion. Before that there was space for water jacket between the cylinders, so distortion was not a problem. One exception was for export motors to Great Britain, as an option in all cars from '34 onwards, including the 112, which had a 2-21/32" bore with the 5" stroke crank. Definitely "Under square"! These engines had water spaces between the cylinders, so were a special casting. Just some more useless information!
