Thermostat Instalation Tricks
Ok guys, I have tried 3 times now to successfully install a new thermostat in my 1946 super 6. I will say all three times I had made a gasket and attempted to use the original thermostat. I have now ordered and received a new thermostat and gasket but I want to make sure it works this time so I don't ruin my new gasket. I will say the gaskets I made looked as good as the one I have now so I do not think the gasket was the problem. I'll tell you I have installed a lot of thermostats and never had an issue putting a thermostat in any car I have owned...So, OK, What is the trick to put one in my Hudson? LOL

Trick is to glue the thermostat into the housing groove with some gasket cement so the thermostat flange can't sneak under the housing where it creates a danger of leaking or snapping one of the housing ears off.
If the groove has rust etc in it, clean it out with a dremel tool.0 -
Thank you..I'll do that now and install it tomorrow0

How thick is the gasket you are using ? The correct gasket is quite thick compared to a typical thermostat gasket. And yes it does need to nestle into the groove just so or it will not sit right.

What is your original problem?. If it is overheating,it is probably the radiator.0

well, I am down to my last gasket...LOL It still had a small leak on one side. I can see at one time in her life someone was really rough taking a gasket out. I am going to try a different gasket cement and if that doesn't work then i am down to the gasket in a tube stuff. As far as gasket thickness, I ordered the gaskets and thermostat from a gentleman here on the club so I believe it is correct. I really appreciate you guys jumping in to give me ideas. Hopefully one day I can be answering question instead of asking so many. Oh and I had the radiator cleaned and tested, that is why I am putting new thermostat in.0
