Starter and Carb problems? 54' Jetliner
I just bought a new 6v 90 amp/hour batt to start my new 54' Jetliner 3D sedan. I find the engine turns over very slow is this normal for a car this age? Also the bottom of the Carb (single) was floated with gas driping onto the manifold and exhaust after i cranked it some. Is this because of the carbs diagrams/gaskets or because the air cleaners off (there were no signs of leaks from the fuel lines.)

Some times a new battery is low on charge from a parts store as it can sit in stock for some time. This has happened to me. other than putting a good charge to it check all contacts . Grounds are very important to a 6 volt. Sounds like the float is stuck open most likely or the screws are loose. You might want to check for this as gas on the manifold is asking for trouble. Always something simple . Good news is that you know where to start on getting it to run again.0

The battery might be low on charge from sitting. I don’t know if you can charge it with a 12v DC Napa charger or would I need to buy a 6v charger for automobiles (if they still exist).
Also its strange the carburetor would leak from the bottom gasket very heavily I figured automobile carbs would be more sophisticated and have an overfill hose to drain the gas in a safe place or return to the tank.
I found out that the carb for these cars are widely available and was used on many other brands other than Hudson. There replicas are quite cheap too as well as rebuild kits just the matter of finding a carb rebuilder/supplier here in Ottawa, On. Which can order me the parts (I don’t want to buy over the internet)

That 90 Amp sounds very low. I just put in a new 640 Cold Cranking Amps battery in my '53 Super Jet, and it winds it up like it were 12V. Of course all the connections are clean and all the grounds are good and clean.

I've now went back to exchange the 90amp for a more expensive 627 cold cranking amp one. the engine still turns over very slow? I noticed the ground wire was grounded to the frame way in the back and the batt is also modded to sit in the trunk. Should i ground the batt right to the block? and were is the ground bolt on the block thanks, mitch0

I would do a voltage check as the engine is being cranked over. it should not drop below 5 volts. It could be your starter is not up to scratch. Certainly attend to earthing, and make sure you have good heavy duty cables. good luck,

Yes , dont just go to part store and get new 12-volt cables off the shelf. They are about half the size you need. If you need to go to a welding supply place with your old one and get the right size wire and make your own,

I'l try checking the volts while cranking this weekend when i can get a secondhand.
The ground wire and hott are aluminum wire ? there 4 awg size there new not stock
Also the whole car has aluminum wire not copper would rewiring it all with copper effect the resistence amps etc...0 -
Aluminum wire ? ? I believe you found your problem sir. . .

I thought all cars in the early 50's has aluminum wire due to a shortage? There origional because they had fiber insulation instead of modern rubber/plastic0

On a six volt system you should run 00 awg cables.

You may be seeing "Tinned:" copper wire not Aluminum wire,
Roger0 -
Yes i think its tinned copper wire i spliced the head light wires and found some copper. The whole car has wires that are greish blue is it because its old.0

That would sound right ,they tarnish with age. Does'nt realy effect anything , however the insulation will breakdown from age. And that is the real issue to deal with . Just replace with like size new wire and you should be fine. There are replacement wiring harness units available if you have deep pockets
