Milling the head

I am sending my engine block to the machine shop tomorrow to have it bored and new guides. Have had some comments about having the head milled to increase compression. It looks good at present and probably does not need to be milled but curious if anyone has any feelings or comments about this, if it would increase power or cause problems? Any comments would be appreciated

You did not say what year your Hudson is or what engine/head you have. Anyway, the flat head engine heads are not very thick and the amount of increased compression is not the best, quickest way to increase the power. I would suggest that you only "lap" as you have to to get a good flat fit. Do be sure to go with grade 8 studs of a larger size. It will pay you big time in the long run. If you want to increase the hp on your engine there are some great threads on line from folks who have done that.

Usually they can only be milled once. I would wait untill it has to be done.
Otherwise you may be shopping for a new head.

  • I dont know about the older heads but I recall the Stepdown heads were 2" thick. Therefore you can measure from the original to see if they had been cut down. The number sixty thou. comes to mind as max allowable. Also when you buy new head bolts dont forget new grade "8" washers for them,

The car is a 50 pacemaker, 232. I don't think it needs to be done. To me it looks good, just have others giving me their advice, thought I would ask the experts. I have the new bolts and washers on the way. Thanks.

I guess you have to ask yourself. Why do i want to raise the compression? If you are building a race car.. yep... But a 232 in a Hudson? With todays gasoline I would be tempted to lower the compression by running a 308 head. Any kid in a Honda with a coffee can mufler is gonna beat you away from a traffic light anyway. May as well think reliability. JMHO
