I am removing the head from my 308 and broke the top off the center bolt, can you believe it! Now the head pivoits around the bolt shaft, any ideas on how to remove the head.

  • If you pivot the head you also bent some valve heads. Head has to come straight up so as not to bend any valves. That's the reason to use line up dowels, to remove and to install. Walt.

One way is, get yourself some sharp drill bits and start drilling. It won't take that long, just try to stay centered and straight in the bolt. You only need to drill the depth of the cylinder head. Once you have drilled down ,it will finally relieve itself. And as Walt suggest, don't twist it back and forth, will only cause more work. Also,be careful not to scare the deck of the block, this will cause cylinder head gasket problems and concerns upon re-assembly. Hope this helps,CG
