I'm looking for a thermostat for my 52 Hudson Hornet. It's a 308 with a H-145 head. Thanks Jeff

  • otto54 - I would not put a new old stock (50 year old)
thermostat on my car. Use a modern one with a easy modification of the therm. housing as discussed on this forumn a couple times. Norm

Rockauto lists thermostats for the 55 308 here

  • Walt Mordenti also has a kit to update the thermostat housing to a modern type. As far as the N.O.S units I've found you can shake the bellows type like Hudson used and hear the fluid inside. If the fluid has not leaked out its a prety good bet they will work as intended.

  • I just converted mine to a modern type thermostat, followed the instructions from the forum members, works great. I now have 2 of the old style thermostats, 1 that came out of my car and works and the other that I bought at a flea market many years ago. Both I would sell for $5 plus shipping. I would suggest that anyone change over to the modern thermostat, plus have your radiator re-cored to modern specifications and a modern rad cap put on. The people that did mine did a great job, no problems for over 10 years, the fellow that did the re-coreing told me to put a 4psi cap to eliminate problems. Also should put on new hoses since the anti-freeze will be out of the engine and rad. In other words no short-cuts, you don't want to be towed because of a bad rad or hoses.

Since changing hoses don't forget to replace the heater hoses and flush heater core.

If anyone would like a NORS t-stat for the Hudson 232, 262 or 308, I have a good stock of them, and you can get them for just the cost of the psotage. email me your snail mail address and I can let you know the postage cost.

Would you be able to bring some to the Gettysburg meet? I would appreciate one and would buy your lunch for it. Thanks, Bob P

Bobdrives = Yes, I'll have some with me at Gettysburg. Going to try to make it to the forum get-together on Friday.
  • Just make sure it has the correct special rubber ring at the top, which hot water can not destroy as that is what seals of the by pass for all water to go to the radiator when engine gets up to temp. This item could not be bought separate as it only came with a new thermostat. O rings will not work, remove the thermostat after a few miles and it's gone, blocking a few cores at the top of the radiator. This is the reason I started to make the by pass kit that work like the original thermostats. Walt.
