Installation headliner hudson six 4door 1939
Hello!
Om gosig to put in the headliner in My Hudson this week/weekend and Wondering if anyone has got any good tips about how to make it as easy as possible? Is the headliner going to be folded underneath the rubber for the rear windows or is it going to be fastebed on the rear somwhere else? I know there is a part that goes around the rear window where there should be possible to fasten the headliner. But i have no idea how it should be done on this car, and have installed a headliner before, and cant find anything on google aswell. So i need all the tips, ideas and how to guides as i can.
I have all the arches and i know how to install them, and they are marked to fit the correct spot. But then i need all the info i can get.
Thanks
Kristoffer

I've done a couple.First allow lots of uninterupted time.Clean hands often.
You can use a flexeble putty knife around the back window if you grind off the corners and flatten the edge.Don't bottom out any tacks untill you have every thing stretched into place , you most likely will need to remove some to get rid of wrinkles or folds. If you must glue around the windshield , be sure to cover your dash with something the glue won't penetrate.
Before you put your trim around the windows and doors, mist the whole headliner with distilled water , and use a hair dryer to shrink out the wrinkles. If they don't come out ,you need to remove and retack, than repeat.
It's not the hardest job , just takes paitence. The seats are out , right? You'll need the room to move around.
Good luck , Roy0 -
Wouldn't it be necessary to add, that one must assure that all the rubber window gaskets are correctly sealed (and, that one must then test them with a garden hose)? No worse outcome could be imagined, than to spend 15 hours installing the headliner, only to have it water-stained around the rear window during the next rainstorm.0

Yes, the seats are out. The window gaskets are going to be replaced during the installation as planned, otherwise , if not necessary to remove rear windows, i will replace and test before.
But if im correct i will start woth installing all the beams, but not tightening the screws to let the move a bit if needed during installation. Then start from the front over the windshield and then work my way along the sides rearways? Not securing anythin "permanentley" before the headliner sits correcly in position.
This is going to be a real interesting operation. I have devoted all free evenings of the entire weekend for this operation now. That should be enough i hope.

About the windlace, the strip that goes above the doors along the roofline, does this lace need to go in before the headliner? Or is it possible to fix the headliner to the sides and then loose the screws for the bar wich you fold the headliner in under and get the windlaces in that way?
Otherwise the headliner is in, and stretched to the frond and rear. Only the sides left now.0 -
They need to be tacked to something , not sure how you could do that with the
the headliner already fastened.0 -
They are hanged on hooks that are on the side above the doors on the inside of the car, this side is attathed with screws that holds them to the body, and the headliner is supposed to be folded and glued in between this part and the body. And what i can see this part is still removeable with the headliner fastened. What i'm worried about is what will happen to the tension of the headliner if i untighten this to get the windlace in.
I have searched around a lot on the internet for guides how to install a headliner the easiest way, but can only find for modern cars (60's and above) wich doesn't have the same ways to fasten on the sides.
Thats why i may have a lot of a bit stupid questions, but all the info is better than have none and try to install it with trial and error methods.
Do anyone know about a good guide for installing a headliner in an older car?0 -
The headliner is in, not really 100% perfect, but i have it sprayed with water so hopefully it will set.
I did not use reccommended fabric for headliners so that could be one reason why it didn't stretch as it should have. The rear went almost perfect, you could almost use the lining as a drum. But i think the biggest problem was the seams that is quite thick and presses out the piece wich it should fold under, so the parts betwen the seams did not get properly pressed under, wich lead to a bit poor stretching of the material.0
