Heater Core Leak(s)

After getting the Pacemaker back together, I found I have a leak in the heater core under dash somewhere. The fan unit is still not re-installed (from when I had the transmission out).

I guess it could be a hose from the firewall to the core. But I have not gone that deep into it yet. So a few questions....

1) What should I be looking for?
2) Are cores available? Repairable? Alternative cores to use (just in case)?
3) Can I bypass the passenger heating system and temporarily use a hose from the water pump to the cylinder head?

you can splice the hoses together or use one length to bypass heater. core or control valve likely leaking have it removed and pressure tested at a rad shop, if unable to do it yourself. they can be recored . good luck

Thank you for the reply. That is one thing I can put on the To Do list and set aside while I work to get the car drive-able with out too much worry.

Hudzilla has good cores if it turns out yours is leaking.

I installed a new core in my Hornet, can't remember what it's from... Mid 70's Ford I think... But it required cutting another hole on the drives side for one of the ports. I also pitched the Ranco valve and just used a cable controlled heater ball-valve. Simple and works really well.

I have a '51 Pacemaker and I matched up the heater core to one that was a tab bit smaller but fit perfectly with no alterations. I think that it fit a truck but don't recall the year or make. I got it from Carquest but I think that any good parts store could match yours to a new one. You should also replace the Ranco valve to cover all your bases.
  • Club Coupe,

After removal, I take the thing in so they can measure it and figure out what fits? Hudzilla has the Ranco valves.

It is clear from the leak that it is from the heater core or a hose connecting to it. The valve is dry (at least what I think is the valve).

Yep. Go to a good parts store like NAPA and lay it on the counter and ask for a replacementr. If it's an older guy on the counter you can tell him that it's for a Hudson. Anybody under 40, tell them that you don't know what it's for or what it is. ;) Seriously, I was allowed to take mine back to the parts bin and match it up myself and maybe they will let you do the same. I think that mine ended up being about 1/2 inch smaller that the original, but it has been close to 10 years ago that I replaced it. When I redid my car I went with new parts as often as possible, even though sometimes I had to "fudge" on things like heater core size.
