need 47 Hudson help

Hey guys,

I was messing with putting the rear bumper pan back on today (the sheet metal that goes between the back bumper and the body). The piece has these sort of fork tabs that go between the bumper brackets/frame pieces and and the rear bumper. What I can't figure out is which side of the brackets do these sheet metal tabs go on?

If I put them on the outside of the brackets it looks like the pan is too far away from the body, but I imagine it will blend under the curve of the bumper though.

If I put it behind the brackets it blends to the car body better. So which is it?

The other problem I have is that the tabs don't exactly line up with the bracket holes where the bumper bolts go through. It may be that the pan is bent a little but I also had the body off the chassis and maybe it's the alignment of the body itself. I'm not sure because the trunk floor was repaired/welded back up.

The other question I had regarding the rear pan is I have seen some 46-47 Hudson restorations where someone put sheet metal screws through the bottom of the rear bumper pan and up through the trunk floor to pull the pan up closer to the body so it would blend. Is this a good or bad idea??? Since the back of the trunk floor is where these bodies tend to rust it seems it might cause an opening for rust to start? The sheet metal had some rubber stops on the back edge of the pan so I assume Hudson never put any screws through the trunk floor.

Any help is appreciated... thanks.

  • Aaron,
On my 47, I put some small rubber grommets between the pan and the trunk, then a couple of screws through it to the trunk. It seems to work well, and with the grommets between I don't think it is a rust issue.

Grommets...good idea. I'm just thinking of when it rains and water sits and or drains off the rear pan where would it run off... between the sheet metal and trunk?

How about pictures does anyone have good pictures of the sheet metal between the rear bumper and body ? Top side or from under the car ?

Here you go ... tabs are on the front side of the brackets. If any other pic's needed, just describe and I'll get them (Just had to add this last one!)

Thanks Park, I don't mind the extra pic you have a beautiful C8 there. Seems that the car does have some sheet metal screws up into the trunk Is that correct ?

Yes, there are several screws, but you don't see them from inside the trunk. Note that just inside the lip of the trunk opening there's a filler panel about 1.5" wide that runs all the way across the opening and is welded to the trunk floor. This panel creates sort of a triangular space running from one side to the other, and the screws come up into that space. I assume this is the original arrangement, but I'm not sure becaue I see no screws listed in the parts book.
