Idle Set Screw & RPMs

I knew my Pacemaker was running a little fast so today while checking the temperature, I adjusted the set screw on the carb where the linkage attaches. Is the proper name "Idle Set Screw"??

I adjusted the screw to a point that the engine slowed and the AMP light stayed off. The fuel screw on the carb had to be given another 1/4 turn out to smooth the idle.

So, my question is: Is that a decent setting or should I give a few more RPMs using the screw?

  • I usualy do the fuel mix screw first with the motor idling too slow. Then screw the fuel in will kill it and too far out will run too rough. You want it out just far enouigh for the idle to smooth out . Then use the idle adjustment to set the speed up.

  • OK. I will add a turn to the "Idle Set Screw" and back the Fuel Mixture off and work from there.
    I had the Fuel set at "bottomed then backed out 1 1/4 turns" before I started.

    At least I figured out how to do it and did not screw up the engine in the process. I just wished access to the "Idle Set Screw" was on the passenger side instead of near the block. It would be so much easier to adjust.

    Wish I had a tach to make sure I have the correct idle RPMs. Oh, well.
