1951 working automatic transmission
I have acquired by accident a working automatic transmission that was hooked to a 262 engine out of a commadore. I was looking for a non functioning 262 engine and overdrive stright transmission. I suspect these automatics are worth a little something. I am supposed to go look at a parted out hudson that has two prices. 170 dollars for the body (I want the front frame to make an engine run in stand out of) or 300 for the body with a 262 engine and overdrive transmission. If I don't take it with the engine installed, I have to help remove the engine. Based on this price, do you think the guy (deals in old cars) would let me take the whole thing for the 170 dollars and the automatic transmission? I hate to take the time to remove the engine although I don't need it since I found the other one to use for parts.....

Think I am a bit confused (not a hard thing to do - to confuse me... )
So - You have another 262 engine already, so you don't need the engine or transmission that are in the car that you are going to make the 'engine running stand' out of?
And - The guy that is selling this car wants $170 for the bare car (minus engine & transmission), if you help him take them out. If not, he wants 300 for the entire package - i.e., an additional $130 for the engine/trans?
Sounds to me like you will be removing the engine/trans either way you go... Guess a lot depends on the condition of the engine/trans, as to its value.
I've seen Hudson transmissions on Ebay every now and then, with & without engines.[/QUOTE]
I sort of would like the overdrive transmission out of the parts car, the engine turns over but does not run. I have not seen it, but expect lots of parts are missing. I am restoring a 50 Pacemaker with a 232 engine and overdrive transmission. I bought an extra 232 engine, and transmission, I will rebuild it as a spare and want the run in stand to maintain it on. The only thing I was really after was the body to take the run in frame off of. The problem was taking the time to take the old engine out and I felt I could use a few parts off the old 262. Ken Cates sent me a note about someone close by who had the commadore parts for sale. I contacted them and have agreed to purchase the parts which include a 262 engine and transmission. They have been removed from the car. The owner said he had driven the car up and down the driveway a few times, so the automatic transmission works. I am since I am a day away from the parted out car, I hate to take the time to remove an engine from it. I figured I would pay the 130 dollars for the few parts I need plus not having to take it out on the trip. The only transmission part I need is the front main drive gear to use as a cluch alignment tool. I just wondered if the automatic transmission might be an attractive enough offer the owner might trade the installed engine and trans for it so neither of us had to work to remove it....0 -
Probably not. The owner of the parts car probably just wants out of it, especially with the prices quoted so he would not have a use for the automatic. If you don't need anything but the front drive gear for clutch alignment, there are plenty of plastic alignment tools available on the market. I have an old set of wooden ones which work just fine.0

Note, The 51 Automatic Lis The Least Desllireablle, As Lit Lis A Silngle Range, And Cannot Be Downshifted At Speed. I Always Use A Later Dual Range When Doing A 51, A Much Better Set Up, Bill Albright0
