My 52 Hornet Hollywood is in need of its third fuel pump in two years
Good evening... I have already been through two fuel pumps in my hornet. I think I may switch to an electric fuel pump. My system is six volt. Any suggestions on which pump? Also would need to know what gauge of wire to use on my six volt system to wire it.... And lastly, would you leave the old fuel pump on it, or find some sort of engine block cap? Thank the Lord for this forum!

You dont need real heavy wire for the electric pumps if thats the way you go. 14 gauge should do even on 6volts . This nasty gas we have now will eat up New Old Stock pumps if that is what you are using . Otherwise a good rebuilt fuel pump should last longer than you state. The only thing I might add is leaving the car sit for months at a time will foul them up too. Gas stabilizer can help with this issue.
If you decide to go straight electric I would remove the pump if you dont plan on using it .If the diphram ruptures it will fill the crankcase with gas. There are block off plates available mostly in the HotRod suppliers,

If you rebuild your fuel pump they use modern seals and diaphrams. I have had an electric fuel pump as the only fuel pump for more than 10 years and had no problems. The old pump is a delco and I got the cover plate at a swap meet, but probably available from hotrod suppliers like Roger told you. If you change to use only an electric keep a spare just in case, and you probably should have an electric pump now as a backup.0

Yeah , thats one sceneario I did not go into . Even if you use the standard mechanical fuel pump its nice to have a standby electric in place in the line. Most of them are made so the regular pump will draw gas thu the electric if its off. Then when you go to start the motor you run the electric a few seconds to fill the carb with gas so you dont have to crank engine so long. Our new crap gas evaporates out of the old vented carb's on the Hudson motor's.
Another thing to think of if you run the straight electric pump dont just hook it up to run when the key is on. Run it off the oil preasure switch circuit with a relay so if you loose oil preasure or there is an accident it stops,

I just bought a stepdown that had an auxilary electric fuel pump mounted near the tank. It is (WAS) a diaphram type made by A/C.. I questioned if it was working. When i took it out to check it I found that the whole pump was full of gasoline. The seal had failed allowing fuel to drop down into the electrical part. Where the electrical points are makeing and breaking! the only thing that kept it from explodeing was that no air was present. What a piece of crap!

I'AM RUNNING A NAPA 6 VOLT VANE FUEL PUMP. P/N P4259 IT IS A 6PSI PUMP AND I USE A PRESSURE REGULATER AND A 2 PSI CHECK VALVE WITH A FILTER BETWEEN PUMP AND TANK.0

Last year I sent my Mechanical Pump(MP) to Then & Now in Mass. They use all modern material and check valves and return it show quality for $125. I have an AC/Delco solenoid (EP) pump in line at the tank (similar to Airtex), for priming, or if needed later. So far I did not need it "later". I really could not find a good location on the stepdown frame to mount a Rotary Vane P-4259, without it being seen or being exposed below the frame. Also they are noisy.0

The issue with fuel pumps is kinda getting old. I too have had way too many failures on my convert. I figured that I was good with the newly rebuilt pump I had installed when I first got the car. Now, with just over 2000 miles on it since I bought it, I am getting ready to put the 4th rebuilt pump on it. All 3 have been from reputable re-builders. Now I have no idea from where to make my next attempt at fixing the problem.
While at the National, I waheavingng a problem with it missing. I had KeSchulteee look it over as I was perplexed. HE said... fuel pump... AGAIN. go figure.
He related to me his problems with rebuilt pumps. It took him 3 to get one that worked right on his Hornet. During the same conversation Dave Sollon told me he put one on his cream convert and never had a problem. I wish I his luck!

Lew , maybe if the problem keeps recurring your spacer on the fuel pump is not right. If it is to thin or thick it may cause arm on pump to move outside of its design peramiters,

I buy my mechanical pumps from Dale Cooper. Never a problem. I drive my Hudson every day and use only non-ethanol fuel. We have 2 stations here in Fayetteville that sell only corn free gas. I think that 90% of fuel related problems in our Hudsons can be traced directly to corn. The other 10% to dirty tanks.0

Thanks Roger, Good thought. I need to check it out and find out what teh thickness should be

Put a new (mechanical) pump on my Hornet back in '04 during a major renovation. It's still there, working as well as ever. I have an electric back at the tank, for carb filling and any emergencies.0

I have looked around and can't seem to find the thickness of the spacer for the 8 cyl. Does anyone know it??
Any help would be apriciated
Thanks

Walt was talking about it awhile back,

I used the "Search" box here and found a few things when looking for "Spacer". You may try that ,they mentioned several different pump numbers and spacer thicknesses. You could also send Walt a message and ask him about your particular application,

The Hornet engine and the 232 and the 262 all take the same spacer. I make and sell them for original pumps and the AMC 6737 single action fuel pump. Look in your WTN for my e-mail or phone number. Don't trust listing them here as spammers can get them and boy do they send JUNK and SPAM. Walt.0

Walt, do you have the spacer for the 254?0
