Rubber Mat in trunk of 49 Commodore?
Question - I have a 49 Hudson Commodore which is in the process of being restored. There was an old rubber mat in the trunk which fell to pieces when I tried to remove it. Does anyone know if this mat was original? If it was, any sources for a replacement. I tried the K-Gap catalog, but no luck.

SDHudson used rubber trunk floor mats almost exclusifely in all stepdowns. i have never seen anything else. most restorations including my own, use a carpet with bead edging. as no rubber replacements are available0

correction 52 53 and 54 had a jute type cloth floor mat with a deamond or triangle pattern. 51 and earllier had all rubber,, getting a little slow in my old age, BILL ALBRIGHT0

It would be interesting to see how much a correct reproduction would cost to manufacture. I've got a near perfect original to use as a model. Niels0 -
Hey Niels.
I remember seeing the CEO of Steele Rubber Products on My Dream Car Garage or some show like it...anywho...one of his points during the presentation was that they will make 1 off rubber parts especially if it is something they can sell more of.
You also might want to contact METRO Rubber they already manufacture most of the reproduction Hudson rubber available.
DO IT! I want a nice new rubber mat for my 49!0 -
If you have any luck finding the mat, let me know, I need one too0
-
Hey, did they make any side panels for the trunks? Or just a floor mat? If not, what material do you use to make side panels? I like the look of trunks with the upholstered panels.
Jay0 -
Sounds like there might be a demand for a few of these mats. I'll check it out. Niels0
-
Side of the trunk was painted body color. There is a card board panel which clicks in behind the rear seat. This is made of gray finished kick panel board.0
-
Thanks, you can't see the sides of my trunk with all the undercoating! The info will help.

Personally I don't like the closed in Upholstered trunks. I'd rather have mine fairly plain looking and still be able to put something of substance back there for long x-country trips.
My Quarter panels did not have paint anywhere on the inside. A small bit of red oxide overspray and undercoating on the rear portion - but mostly it was bare metal as shown in this picture.0 -
I think most of the stepdown's out there including mine, could use a rubber trunk mat that's all in one piece.0
-
My 52 and 54 hornets have undercoating like stuff inside the trunk and on the wheek wells. Inside of deck lid is body color. Rebuilt a 51 Pacemaker a few years ago. Trunk space was the same. but sprayed after quarters were installed as the inside quarter and outside of wheels were bare.0
-
Exactly how my 50 pacemaker's trunk is Bill.

Update - I tried Restorations Specialties & and also Metro Rubber - no luck with a Trunk Rubber Floor Mat. The size of the trunk floor is 54" deep by 70" wide ( not really a square, just the max. dimensions ). The largest roll material I have seen is 48" ( short of the 54" REQUIRED ). I will check with Steele Products and see what they have.

I just sent an e-mail to Steele Rubber products - will advise of their reply:

Does Steele Rubber Products carry rubber floor mat material? I am looking specifically for a rubber trunk floor mate for a 1949 Hudson. There is quite a bit of interest from the forum guys at ClassicCar.com. Take a look at the forum threads at:
http://www.classiccar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4500
Seems there is quite a bit of interest in a product that would meet the needs of Hudson owners. I understand that Steele Rubber Products reviews interest from the classic car community and may make a product available if the demand is great enough.

Good Luck, Eddie0 -
You might contact Dany Spring of K-Gap. If anyone were apt to take on this project it would be him, although (frankly) he would certainly have to be convinced that there was adequate demand to justify the cost of tooling up for such an item. He already makes the universal 'Hudson Steel Built Body' front mats but those fit all Hudsons back into the 1930's so there is undoubtedly a much greater call for them, than for just the Step-Down trunk mats. Anyway, you might ask him what the chances are.0

I would buy three today if they were available.0

Count me in too! But make mine for a Conv.0

I, too, am looking for floor mats and trunk mat. Although, my 50 pacemaker had a jute mat in the trunk that match the seats. It fell apart as I tried to removed to clean the turnk this weekend.
Anybody have any luck finding a source? K-Gap does not sell them for my model.0 -
Doing a Google search on trunk mats, replacement trunk mats, etc., should bring up some leads on companies that offer a variety of vinyl mats. I've seen these sites but do not remember any specifics. Probably not original in appearance, but cheaper and more correct that carpet type mats.0

Trunk mats and gas tanks well all could use a few0 -
Guys,
I represent/am a dealer for Auto Custom Carpets here in my shop, and they make numerous trunk mats for several models back to the 40s. I am talking to one of the guys there now about the possibility of making one up for Hudson Stepdown. These are usually made a little larger than specific dimensions, so that you can trim to fit. I will need to know what the face pattern of the mat, was it plain black rubber, or did it have a color or design? I will let you all know as soon as we nail something down, and if it is going to be possible to make these, I will order a whole mess of them to sell to the group.0 -

I don't know why - but I'd really like a correct rubber mat to put back in my trunk
If you were making a reproduction one it might be cheaper to leave the gas tank filler neck hole, and spare tire mount hole off the repop and folks could trim as needed. Otherwise there are differences in gas tanks, and spare tire mounting in stepdowns depending on year...
Did the stepdowns with the vertical spare tire mount have the same type of mat? If so this would make more of an argument to not put the spare tire mount or hole in the repop rubber mat.
The pictures I have of my orignal are not very good but maybe you can get an idea of what it looked like. Maybe someone out there has a good original to take pics and measurements from?0 -
We talked to Press Kale (former owners of KGAP) in the past about making these trunk mats. As you can see in the photo of the previous post, these mats are molded, and fit the trunk floor very well. It is not possible to duplicate this mat in a flat configuration due to the way it fits along the edges by the wheel wells, so a mold would need to be made. The cost of having a mold made for a piece of this size was unbelievable.

Hudsons get pleasure with KGAP rubbers0 -
If you make it, they will buy!
How much and how many...
I imagine these could be sold for $100-$150 easy, maybe even $200
Dany, make some stickers with the signature post! That would be a great promo piece.0 -

I'll buy at that price.
The recommendation to use Google search turned up nothing of significance.
Alas, since this ain't a rotisserie car, carpet may be in only thing readily available.0 -
Another good source is Chester & Herod, 1924 W. Mission Road, #F, Escondido, CA 92029, phone 1-800-659-9138. They make carpet kits and have patterns to make trunk mats. Talk to Jim and mention the HET. Good carpet and trunk mats at good prices. Free samples too.0
