I should have been more specific, my '52 Hornet is completely restored and runs great, however couple of problems have to be attended to; had 3x one piece tubing drive shaft made wiith proper tube yoke, u-joint and slip yoke, but experiencing noise from under car. Before installing or during restoration, drive tunnel was modified/enlarged welded allowing for 3 inch drive shaft tubing, but still hitting? Tried to see if drive shaft shop would make new shaft using 2 1/2 inch tubing, however he felt it would be too weak; see pictures.
My question is, would anyone have pictures of a original drive shaft/line installed in a Hudson? If no pictures correct lenght of the stock drive shaft/line; lenghts of both 2 pieces if possible. Can email direct to kada9528@cox.net

Thanks,

Ray

  • You can not use a 1 piece drive shaft in a Hudson. You must have the center support. To use a 1 piece shaft you have to change the angle on the rear, meaning spring saddles Walt.
  • Yes - with one piece driveshaft there is not enough angle . You cannot have a "Straight" driveshaft , Thats why Hudson made it two parts,

  • Thanks to all...I thought I read somewhere on old FORUM that some members used one piece driveshaft, guess I mis-read and mis-informed Allen (restorer) causing us to make new one piece drivshaft. Makes sense to me now, we are thinking and will check with driveshaft shop next week to make two piece shaft and cross member to bolt to first portion connecting to transmission? Hope that resolves my driveshaft noise hitting around drive tunnel?

  • The older Hudsons had one piece units but the Stepdown cars are too low,

Why not just get a used drive shaft. I'd get one from a car that had the same rear end as yours. Make sure you get the center bearing with the snubbers I think the tail shafts are a little different length between the Hudson rear end, used in the beginning of 52 and the Dana/Spicer (metal plate bolted on the rear) used thereafter. Your car should still have the center bearing mount. Watch for the little arrows when putting the two pieces together to keep them in synch.

Ray, if its rubbing can't you just trim some more out of the section where its rubbing?

I used a 2pc driveline out of a 75 chevy truck with its carrier bearing modified to fit the original hudson carrier xbrace.

  • Thanks Dan,

Nice hearing from you again, trust and hope all is well?

    In early restoration stage, Allen enlarged driveshaft tunnel, make clean welds and two costs of POR-15 preparing for 3 inch one piece driveline connecting to 700R4 transmission and Quick Performance 9" Ford Rearend Package;
    9' Ford Housing/Axile Package (Leaf Spring-Custom)
Custom Lenght (56.75" Wheel Mounting Surface) - Center Pinion - Spring Perches (Included)
Moser Axiles, Beraings, Wheel Studs & Retainers - 31 Spline, 5 on 4-1/2" Bolt Pattern. 1/2 x 2" Wheel Studs - Center Section (Assembled) New Motive Performance Gears (3.50 Ratio) New Ford Motorsports Trac-Loc Posi (31 Spline) New Timken USA Bearings - 11" Drum Brake Kit
(New Drums, New Shoes & New Internals, sorry for lenghty description, but I want to keep in my file folder too!!!
From what we are reading, feel proper way is to install two piece driveshaft and fabricate a cross member to secure transmission (longer piece) section, Allen feels because of going over bumps etc. one piece shaft is causing problem and with drive line section attached to rear end/differential it can move more freely avoiding distrubing hitting nosie. We'll be checking next week with Dan'sDriveline Repair L.A. Shop who made our requested driveshaft to see what if anything can be done with new driveshaft?

On another note: Has anyone have experience with installation of swayway bar on front of installed fatmanfabs Mustang 11 Kit on 52 Hornt coupe?

    Thanks- Ray

Hi Ray, Jason at Bill Albright's Vintage Coach. Jason Fisher (HET Member) Cars, parts and service. Phone 909-823-9168. Had a one piece driveshaft installed on my '54 club coupe, check with him to see if he had any problems with the drive shaft. He told me no problems with the test drive.
See you in Laughlin, I hope to have my '54 there!
