Horn Button Install Help, please

I have the relay, horns and wiring re-installed. Horns work when I use a wire to close the circuit in the steering wheel.

I now have a horn button to install. But there is not a procedure in the Service Manual.

Once I pull up and attach the wire with button end into the Horn Button - how does the horn button get attached to the steering wheel? I see three "dog ears" that seem to align with three notches on the horn button but it is not a solid placement - it just falls back out.

Is there are "Push and Twist" for this install?

    Hi PM500

The attached photo shows the components for the horn button. I had a similar quamdry a few months ago.
On the right of the pic is the base that is secured under the steering wheel nut and inside that is the raised mount where the horn wire is held.
The small piece leaning against the horn button is the contact and once in place, the horn button secures to the base. Push the button down slightly and with a slight turn should be secure (like a bayonet fitting light bulb)

I hope this helps - good luck
  • Ernie28: Thank you very much. That is the exact help in needed. So I hope to report by 10 AM tomorrow that the button is installed and working.

Not getting contact with the "cup" device as seen on the right above. It is almost like the metal is non-conductive.

Do I need to do an "ultra cleaning" on the cup and the spring disk?

How far should the inner spokes of the spring disk stick up if laid flat and measured?

When the spring disk is placed in the button housing, the fingers point out towards the opening/towards the wire end when placed on the steering wheel, correct?

P500, I did not need to clean any of the contact points when installing my horn assy. If the base, cup, wire contact and spring disk are clean and bare metal, contact should be easy. Not sure the exact distance the spokes stick up as mine is all assembled but from memory only about 1/4" or so - this works not only as the contact to earth the wire but also spring tension when depressing the horn.
Yes, you are correct, it is fitted with the fingers pointing down the steering column (wire end). Ensure the centre is making contact with the wire end contact point and the fingers resting on the insulating pad that surrounds the wire end contact.
    Hope you have success.
  • Ernie28: Thank you very much for your help. I found that I needed to bend the four tabs inside the steering wheel so they would make better contact with the "cup".

    These horns are LOUD.

I'm glad you found the problem. Yep loud. My Aunt likes the sound my 52 Hornet horns makes, and wants a pair for her new Ford. I wonder how much louder on 12V?
