OD Wiring - Follow Up
Using the image posted by MikeWA in the thread "O/D Wiring Help @ Relay, please" I WILL have the the wiring complete tomorrow (Thursday).
My follow up question is this: Where to I insert a light bulb in the O/D Harness to 1) tell me switch is on & 2) at speed and O/D engaged?
How does the Free Wheeling lever play in all this?

There's a normally unused terminal on the solenoid, going to contacts inside that close when the solenoid engages. A bulb with power from the accessory feed and provided a ground via these solenoid contacts will tell you that the OD is enabled (cable knob pushed in) and that you've reached OD cut-in speed. Note that the solenoid actually energizes when the governer contacts close, not when you let up on the gas to allow it todrop into OD.0

My solenoid is like the picture MikeWA posted - only two terminals external.0

Interesting ... I've not seen a '50 and later solenoid without the third terminal.0

I may have missed it. I will check later this afternoon when I make the connection to the governor. But I only recall two screw terminals just like the wiring diagram shows.0

The cars are older than most of us at this point. So parts have been swapped out and changes made. Dont be surprised if it no longer has the type of part originaly supplied,

Family history has only told me so much about the car. O/D work is not among the stories. And when I pulled the tranny out to have Dr. Doug refurbish the clutch, all appearances would bring me to the conclusion that the the O/D parts, wires, etc...were Original.0

Solenoid on my '50 Pacemaker also has just two terminals.0

Guys, I must not have had my wakeup pill this morning. That extra terminal was on the pre-1950 solenoids. Sorry 'bout that! Now, the good news is that if you do as I said above but ground the bulb at the solenoid "kickdown terminal" (#6), the light will behave as I described.0

Just so I understand....I take connect one side of my bulb socket to #6 (green wire going to kick down terminal #3), the other side of the bulb socket goes to the Accessory feed on the keyed switch in the dash AND I mount the bulb socket so it is isolated from anything metal (ie ground).0 -
Yes, you've got it. As you said, you can connect the grounding wire either to the #6 on the solenoid or to where the other end of the wire from #6 attaches to the kickdown switch .0

I still may move the kick down as others have suggested in other posts.0 -
I like it elsewhere rather thanb under the gas pedal. Have done several OD installations for others, put the kickdown switch where the left foot can reach it easily, and all seemed to like that arrangement. Especially good if you're running something higher than 4.55 or 4.10 gears in the rear end0

thanks park. i have mine wired up that way. carworks good when not in overdrive shifts well
have not been able to determine if o d is working. have it wored as per diagram. engine appears to rev somewhat but does not appear to pick up speed if i down shift to second its almost like im not in gear or clutch is slipping. clutch is fine when not in o d . any ideas would be helpful

When NOT in overdrive, your engine IS freewheeling. Especially if you are in a lower gear, say 2nd, it can feel like the clutch is slipping because the engine will be at idle at throttle-off, and when you press the pedal, of course the engine will be free-revving until its speed matches that of the drive train.0
