1951 Shop manual on ebay

Interesting piece - fellow's asking $292 or best offer. However looks to me like a reprint. Spiral bound to start with.
Certainly not worth the asking price.

Well at least hes going to ship it for free . . .
Roger0 -
At that price, Roger, he should deliver it in person.

Yeah ,not bad for a $25.00 book . . .0

In checking out the Club Store on the new HET web site, I find the following:
#368 - 1951 Hudson Mechanical Procedure Manual @ $35.00
Even if you are not currently a member of the club, $43.00 will get you first class delivery of the WTN semi-monthly HET magazine, plus allow you to purchase reprinits of Hudson manuals, such as the above at a reasonable cost.
Just a suggestion!

Don't forget he is giving a color chart...that must be worth at least $4.99 At the end, you get the manual for only: $287.01 Michel0
-
i see crazy prices like that all the time. when i list something on ebay i will research a bit and i see what most stuff sells for before i list it. every so often you see someone starting something out about 10 times higher than what they usually sell for and suprise, suprise, it doesn't sell. his high hopes will soon be dashed!0
-
I wrote the seller and tried to inform and educate them. Some folks just won't listen. Here is the response:
"Dear R L, The research I did on this book shows it to be published in 1951. If it is a reprint, which I don't believe, it is a very early one. This is not just a repair manual, but a collectable book. If all you are interested in is the information, then the club store manual is exactly what you need. Thank you for your interest, Anita Young"0 -
. . . love those plastic spirals that came out in '51! And yet still so flexible and supple! Imagine that!0

It is people like her that have driven prices up in this old car hobby to the point a lot of old car lovers cannot afford the hobby any more. Thankfully the people of Hudson club really don't care a hoot if you have a car or not. It's nice to have one, but there are plenty of other things in HET to provide interest and membership. Each of us has something to give, car or no.
I should know - prices of cars have stayed just ahead of what I could afford for years, even more-so in this day and age. But I have never been made to feel that I should have a Hudson to "belong". People take folks like me and welcome us one and all. Part of being a family, I guess.
Thanks everybody.
I really started this post to see what it would produce - I'm amazed at the answers.

I made a "best offer" of $10.00 for the '51 manual.0
-
That should rattle her cage. I ought to "best offer" $11.00 - maybe we'll get her hopes up for a bidding war.
In all honesty I could use it for the online library - but not at her price. I'm scanning a 1952 shop manual at the present - don't have a '51. Being a spiral bound reprint would be easy to scan. Only thing wouldn't come out quite right is the color chart. And that's another thing that just came to my mind - the '52 manual I'm doing doesn't have paint chips and I don't think, tho I could be wrong, any shop manual had paint chips included.

I just got turned down with a $25.00 0ffer ,she just wont budge .. .. ..
Roger0 -
Nuts! I had my $10.00 offer turned down. I was thinking of jacking it way up to $11.00, but seeing that you, Roger, got your $25.00 refused, guess I'll have to pass on this one.
Dan0 -
All you "high rollers" drive me crazy. Just keep prices going up and up. Lol.
Wonder when she figures it all out.
Like I said in an older post, we're all sitting on a gold mine if somebody would just pay some of these asking prices.0 -
I dont sit on mine I keep spreading it around
Roger0 -
I bought a real nice '52 original shop manual a few years ago- can't remember what I paid, but I'm sure it wasn't over 50 bucks, because I'm too chintzy to go any higher than that. I was going to use it, but it was so purty I ended up buying one from the club to actually use, and the original will get sold by my kids at my estate sale for $5 OBO. LOL0
-
I made her an offer of $15.
Wonder if all this activity will register - probably not.
Just dawned on me - I've got a 1952 shop manual I'm currently scanning. All there but well used. Taken apart so will be in a 3-ring binder - great book for "in-shop" use.
That might make it worth, oh, $400???
Oh, well, it's already spoken for. Such is life.

Alex-
If you can get $400 for it, more power to 'ya! Apparently, all you have to do is claim it as a "collectable(sic)", and then it's worth 20 times as much.0 -
RL we got some crazy little people in HET - but ain't none of them crazy enough to pay $400 - on the other hand there's a lot of non-het people (and people who just collect) out there who probably would pay $400. They just haven't found the 1951 manual on ebay yet.

Sorry, Alex, but I just offered $15.25 for the manual. Guess I really want it (if this doesn't do it, I have only one more chance through eBay to make an offer of $15.50)
Dan0 -
Did y'all really make those offers? If so, I will too, maybe she'll get the hint.0
-
Hell, yes! I did! In fact, I'm waiting for my latest offer to be rejected.0
-
My $15 best offer was rejected.
(
I'll just go off in the corner and cry!!!
Go ahead Russ - join the fun. That gal ain't got a clue - yet. Maybe I'll drop her an email and tell her why she's getting these low offers.
I did, I did - I dropped her a msg telling her why it was a reprint and that she was getting these "best offers" from members of the Hudson-Essex-Terraplane club. Told her that it was not an original because Hudson never used covers like on this item, never had paint chips in their shop manuals and Hudson never spiral bound their manuals (at least to my knowledge). Also told her the only way she was going to get $292 was from a collector who had no idea about Hudson original manuals.

Yes I made an offer ,I have no reason to lie .. .. .. I'm not good at it anyway,
Roger0 -
She answered my comments - as follows:
I appreciate your input. I will take this item off because at $20.00 + 6.45 shipping (at least, it's a heavy paperback), I don't think it is worth any more of my time.
Regards,
Anita Young
Don't know what, if anything this proves, but at least one person now knows that they don't have the gold mine they thought they did. Maybe we should do this to all overpriced items that show up on ebay.

Knowing what you are will be doing with it Alex, they should give it for free... A huge and unique contribution to preserve Hudson cars !0
-
The final word - 1951 Hudson shop manual on ebay - http://tinyurl.com/8qyma2w - this is an original manual and tho the price is still a bit high at $89 it is more realistic than the $292 repro auction that started this post.

well it is a nice original book ,least he could do is ship it free thou,
Roger0 -
She is also very generous with the international shipping only $50.00 LOL0
-
Trevor, I managed to get 5 or 6 manuals from Australia for $50 shipping (and thank you very much to the member that stepped up and paid the shipping for me - and another member who so wanted to help out he paid my dues to next summer.)
And here I shall say thank you, not only to those two but everybody for your generosity.
