Cigarette lighter replacement
I quit smoking 17 years ago, but I would like to use my original cigarette lighter socket for cell phone, GPS etc. I have an alternate lighter under the dash that I use for that purpose now, but would rather use the original lighter. The car has been converted to 12 volts at which time I purchased a 12 volt lighter that works fine, but when I put a voltmeter to both lighters, the original only shows 7 to 8 volts while the alternate is showing 11 volts. Why the difference? Anyone ever replace a cigarette lighter in a 48 Hudson with a modern one?

You must have a bad ground in the dash on the original one,

Maybe they put a resistor in the lighter circuit when the 12 volt conversion was done,
otherwise the lighter might become a flame thrower.

Thats a possibility , odd that they would convert the lights and stuff and not the lighter though,

I did the 12 volt conversion myself using the information Park W. put on Dave Sollon's website. There is no resistor in the lighter that I know of. I simply replaced the 6 volt lighter with the 12 volt one Park recommended without replacing the outlet. I have no clue for the difference in voltage unless there is a short somewhere.0

Those mount in the dash with a ring you tighten from the back. The front lip makes the ground connection to the dash. Any corrosion there, or if this is the model where lighter is in an add on module under dash. Where it mounts to the dash could cut voltage to the unit. You might try a jumper wire from the body of the lighter (behind dash) and a good ground. And see if your voltage goes up. This would confirm if you had a bad ground or not.
