Front Seal for Single Lever Std. Trans.

Hi Folks,

Im trying to repair the standard transmission with OD for my 51 pacemaker.

I got the gasket kit and rear seal from Dale Cooper and managed to turn the cluster gear bushings on my lathe. The part I havent found yet is the front seal that mounts into the back of the bell housing. I was told that the proper seal is hard to come by so some guys make a spacer ring so that a seal that isnt as deep can be used. I guess there is a thread already on the forum that discusses this and gives the dimensions but so far I havent been able to find the thread by doing a search for "transmission seals" etc.. Can anyone help me with this? Also the book mentions hand stoning any raised edges on the gears. Can anyone elaborate on that? Thanks a lot. Rob Fayette

  • Thanks Lou. I found the article in the Nov-Dec 2007 issue of the WTN. I made the spacer ring described in the article and also the seal driving tool described in the article. I ordered the seal ,(#13421) through NAPA. It took about a week to get. As I had posted before I got the rear seal for the overdrive unit,(#10684) ,through Dale Cooper although I understand they are available just about anywhere. I also got the gasket set for the transmission through Dale. The two bearings for the transmission and the one bearing for the overdrive unit came from NAPA. I ordered the sintered bronze bushings through Grainger and bored the I.D.to size in the lathe. I have since found the bronze bushings from Enco for a lot less money but you still have to bore them out to size. The biggest problem I had was trying to get the bushing I.D. to the correct .865 ". The book says to ream it to size but I couldnt find a .865" reamer to buy. I bought a set of adjustable reamers from Grizzly and that was a waste of money. I found that when I pressed the bushings into the countershaft the I.D shrunk about .005" so I bored the I.D. of the bushings to .870" and when I pressed them in they came out pretty close to the .865". Later I did find a reamer for sale online that is .866". I think that would be close enough so if I ever do this job again I think I will try that reamer. It is from JTS machinery online. This was an interesting job trying to go through this transmission. Now I just have to get the rest of the car restored so I can see if it works or not. LOL. Rob
