Taking Windshield Wiper Transmission Apart?
Hi Guys,
Do any of you know if the Wiper Transmissions on stepdowns can be disassembled so the pot metal part can be sent off for chrome plating?
It looks like maybe if the splined part that the wiper attaches to were pressed off its shaft maybe that would be a start. There is a lot of plating that needs to be done. I dont think I will spend that much all at once but at least part of it.
I'm still trying hard to get ready for Spokane. I've got all of the panels painted and the trunk area. Both quarter panels are buffed out. The doors, hood , and front fenders are coloer sanded but need buffing. I know I wont have the interior or top done by Spokane but Im hoping to get it at least drivable.

Rob, To answer your question, yes, the wiper transmission tower can be disassembeled for replating. If you have a arbor press great, if not use a punch and hammer over a vise. First, take a very thin punch and punch out the two rivets holding the transmission cable retainer shield in place. Then place the wiper tower face down with the knurled wiper arm spacer facing down stradling over an open space . Next, either press or hammer the pivot shaft down towards the front of the wiper . After it comes out remove the pivot and cable assembly . Note: Make sure of the orientation of the cable assembly before removal. Lastly, carefully remove the rear brass bushing by using the thin punch. Your wiper tower is now ready for replating. These instructions are for stepdown wiper towers but should work with modifications to other models. Good luck.0

Rob, Once you do a few of these also find out that you can switch wiper towers left to right, right to left. Only problem is ,if you need the windshield squirter. LOL.0

Those rivets can easily be replaced with 4-40 screws. The holes are perfect to run a 4-40 tap .0
