I need some help determining the correct upholstery for a 1952 Hudson Hornet, with blue interior. Does anyone have pics of an original 1952 Hornet interior they could share, especially close ups of the fabric? Thanks!

I am attaching a 52 brochure that may give you some help. This is my first try so I hope it works..

Here ya go. A little stained and ragged but that's what ya get with original. BTW, she's for sale. Got too many Hudsons.
  • Thanks Guys, for your help. Uncle Josh, The '52 Hornet in question has a blue interior like yours but does not have the blue striped cloth, but rather a light beige ribbed style. It looks just as original as yours, was there another upholstery choice for the Hornets? Also, should your car have a blue horn button?

Yup, the horn button is a replacement in good shape. Here is the old one. Digital pics make it look better than it is.
  • This certainly confirms the availability of TWO different interior fabric on the '52 Hornet, I have seen several of each style. Here's a pic of the "ribbed" material.....image

I have an actual Dealer's presentation catalog which goes into much more detail on trim , interior materials etc, and this fabric is not shown. Look at the copy above of the brown colored material in both Commodore and Hornet for 1952. While they are slightly different, those were the only brown option available at that time.

User MJsandbe from MN had the blue striped fabric repro'd by a local weaver for his 52 sedan. SMS auto fabrics in OR carrys the 52 brown striped fabric, call SMS as they may have made some blue striped since last year?

Here's the ribbed brown material in a blue '52 interior, known to be all original. At this point I'll assume buyers had a choice of these 2 materials, unless there is a third material like the blue striped, only brown striped?

Dealer or customer had the option on some exterior colors to have either the blue or brown interior. Whatever, the blue included blue color dash, steering wheel and metal door & sidewall trim. If they opted for the brown interior, then they got brown dash, burgundy steering wheel and brown metal trim on the doors and side walls
  • Understand that. Have you ever seen the blue interior offered with a choice of 2 different fabrics on the seats/door panels, as shown on this post?

It appears to me that the brown cord is a "close match" replacement that someone has used to replace the original. There were only 2 fabric options on 52 Hornets & Commadores, the blue and the brown. I have never seen a factory blue/brown combination, The fabric weave was the same in both colors. The problem has been that a close replacment for the blue was not available. Someone on the forum had some made in the last several years, I don' know the details. When doing mine in 2009 I searched for the blue strip and couldn't find a thing. I then deceided to do what we did back in the 50's when the upholstery wore out, just replaced it with what was available, that I liked and could afford. Result attached. Good luck in your hunt. BL
  • I have been involved with Hudsons for 40 years now,and I have never noticed another '52 with a blue interior trim with the ribbed brown fabric, but here it is! The '52 in question is a two owner car since new, and the interior remains original (except carpets)and in gorgeus condition.I was just inquiring to see if there were others like this out there, not searching for fabric, as fortunetly there is no need to replace any of it.
  • I have owned a 52 Hornet with blue interior since 1960. I just sold it this spring, to many Hudson and I am getting old. The blue stripped show earlier is correct for the 52 Hornet. The brown upholstery is close. The 52 Commador 8s had different blue stripped upholstery. They had left over 51 Hornet blue cloth. At least the Commadore 52s I hace seen through the years. Also the buttons are larger in the 52s. I bought a brown 52 Hornet 50 years ago that had moroon and white leather upolstery and stripped the interior out of it except the red vinal headliner. I still have it except for the mouse holes that have appeared through the decades. I was told that was an option availabe but, used mainly on export Hudsons.
  • PS I should add that the cars I referrence above are all 4 door sedans. Also the vinal to cloth patterns on the 52 Commadore 8s were the same as the Hornets. They just used 51 cloth on the Commadores. The Commadore 6s were entirly different in 52. Before I knew how rare they were I junked out a 52 Commadore 6 sedan that was not to bad of shape. One of the many mistakes I made decades ago. lol

52 brown hornet original interior and SMS replacement fabric closeup.
  • I have aways thought that the brown Hornet cloth and the interior in general in a 52 Hornet was the prettiest interior Hudson ever made. The SMS replacement fabric looks like a dead ringer for the 51 Hornet. How or were do you get this??
  • You might try SMS Fabric co ... ... ...
