WGD vs. WDO

I've read somewhere that some Hudsonites had 'upgraded' their older WDO Carter carburetors by replacing with a 'newer' WGD carb.

Any thoughts or opinions on this? Just curious if I could make my '49 run better with a newer carb.

I have the original WDO on the 49 C 6, and a WGD on the 52 8. Have rebuilt them both. The brass anti-perc valves tend to get sticky on the WDO and starve the engine if it sets for a few months. The WGD has a different arrangement for anti-perk

It appears that the WGD was a little simpler, less trouble-prone and less expensive to make, which is probably why Hudson switched over to it.

Your engine will run great with either one if they're clean and adjusted properly. If it doesn't, your problem is elsewhere.

By the way, Geoff Clark says to set the float 1/8 lower than spec because the new gas has a lower specific gravity and will rise too high in the float chamber. Fixed my stalling on a hard or downhill stop.

    Uncle Josh,

Thanks for the tips. I'll probably rebuild my WDO, and will try the lower float setting.
