For a car that appears to have had a great deal of cash invested in it, why on earth would they stop short with fake leather?0
-
Thanks Russ,
Well... It doesn't look like he has misrepresented this car in any way. I think he said it was a "nice driver". Unlike so many Hyped ads on Ebay. Doesn't sound like he was doing anything with the car, except enjoy it..In other words, he didn't do anything to the car to satisfy anyone except the owner. Looks like an honest description. When the time comes to sell mine..? I'll do the same. If you like it, buy it .. if it isn't your cup of tea.. don't. Can't satify everyone.
If you look at what you are spending on yours, I bet you would agree that this is a bargain. Even if you had to replace that disgusting vinyl. LOL0 -
Arkie-
I agree. It seems to be the area they "saved" on, if that was the intention. Top of the line step-down convertible ought to have leather in it, IMO.
Dave-
We'll see where it ends up, price-wise . . . as of this morning, it hadn't met the reserve. I reckon the reserve is around the 55-60K (just a guess). It's still got a week to go and the people that really want it will be waiting to snipe it at the end.
Did anyone notice the two batteries wired in series under the hood? What's up with that? Back-up?0 -

Russ, I saw something like it on Richard and Lauraine Esparza's 1950 Hudson that came to Gettysburg from California. On theirs, you could have 6 volts or as much as 12 volts as needed. For example, he had some accessories or headlamps that uses 12 volts and the rest was standard 6 volts. But I am no good in car electricity, maybe someone could give it a clearer explanation. I don't see relays for a 6-12 arrangement in any of the photos, so it appears to be just two batteries in parallel for more cranking amps.0
-
Notice the horn relay on the inner fender? Thats different0

Curious about the engine - description says "ENGINE: Gas in-line 6 cyl 292,04 cubic inches 143,28 HP at 3800 RPM (Rebuilt) Twin one barrel carburaters"
Overbored 262 engine???

Sure wouldn't think they would have anything other than a 308 in that valuable a car- probably a typo.0
-
It is still a beautiful car with imitation leather uppolstery. The 2 -6 volt batterys if hooked up in series. 6 volt as original and 6 volt on oposite side of solinoid will give 12 volts when starting engine only and other wise will be only 6 volts for ign and all lights. The car will be 6v only 12 v for starting. How Cool! This one's a beauty, too. Although for the life of me, I can't figure on where the "Only approximate [sic] 3857 ragtops were produced!!" comes from.
Total Stepdown convertible production was 10,138 from '48 to '54. 1954 Convertible production was 222 (Super Wasp & Hornet), with no breakdown (according to Jack Miller and the SCAC-3rd ed.).
Looks like it's been spiffed up in anticipation of a sale.0 -
Over the there have been so many production figures bantered about..What are the latest guesses for each year production of convertibles? What is the source?0

Sarah Young has on her HudsonJet.net web site has a breakdown of Hudson Serial Numbers from 1948 thru 1954, plus Canadian (no breakdown). Her figures as follows:
1948 - 64
1949 - 596
1950 - Not given
1951 - 4A - 425, 5A - 282, 6A - 211, 7A - 181, 8A - 551
(There's a note says the figures approximate
1952 - 4B - ukn, 5B - 220, 6B - 20, 7B - 30, 8B - 360
(Again, these figures approximate)
1953 - Jet - 1 Prototype, 4C-5C - 50, 7C - ukn
1954 - no listing for 4D, 5D; 7D - 244 (approx.)
Where Sarah got these figures from I don't know - I emailed her a while back but she was in the process of moving and her source material was boxed up and buried somewhere. I really should get back to her on this.

Follow Up: I sent Sarah Young an email and she refreshed my memory. The breakdown came from a technical bulletin, TS 78-14, published in a 1978 WTN as a centerfold. Art Adams inserted many of these bulletins during his editorship. Unfortunately I don't seem to have a copy in my computer files and the original documents were passed along to Russel Chilton.

Thanks Alex. Maybe Russ will share some of that with us when he has time away from the assembly of his convertible. He has been a great help to me with my project.
Since the 49 Stepdowns had a fairly simple set of Models IE: Super and Commodore, Six and Eight.. I don't recall ever seeing a Super eight Convertible. There have been so many modifications over the past 63 years, anything could show up, but were they "factory" Super 8 converts ? The other execption that I know of. No Commodore Two door sedans were produced. I saw a beautiful blue one at Pontiac. Although not "original" It sure made a gorgeous car!0
