202 Race camshaft

Over on the Inliners board, I was referred to a book to read. (Hudson Performance Portfolio) I went to Amazon and looked it up. I recoginized the cover. I went to my library of Hudson books and there it was. It had been a gift from a friend when I had helped to rebuild his /6. I read the parts about the Jet. In reading I found a part # for a race camshaft that was made for the 202. A article talks of preparing a Jet engine for Fonty Flock using this camshaft. The cam was a Hudson cam. Part # SU 309777. Does anyone out there have one of these camshafts? Does anyone have the specs. for this cam? I would be interested in either or both. Thanks L Hud

It is not practical to cut a camshaft to 55 year old specifications because cam profile technology has improved more than any other part of the internal combustion engine. Go to a good cam grinder, describe your motor in detail from induction to exhaust including compression ratio, piston top design, valve size, bore, stroke. Let him design a new cam that will be superior to any original and probably give you better mileage to boot.

A cam change doesn't upgrade a motor. The upgrades are done to the motor FIRST and the cam designed to get the most out of it.

The camshaft on the 202 was radically different from any previously used by Hudson as far as overlap was concerned. I'm not an expert by any means on cams, but I had the cam re-profiled on my '29 Hudson and immediately got at least a 20% boost in power output, and also a 20% improvement in fuel economy - from 14 to 18 m.p.g. on a two-ton car. the cam expert said even greater improvements could be had by building up the cam, and also increasing the compression ratio. But getting back to the 202, I get great performance from my Jet liner, with 26 m.p.g.

That part number is in the 48-54 master parts book. listed as "SU" Meaning severe use. I didn't know that Hudson Made SU parts for the Jet. I learn sumpthin' new every day!

There were some SU parts for the Jet because they had applications for the Italia models which there was some intent of Euro road racing --- which never happened to my knowledge.
  • They also had police car aplications. The 6 volt alternator listed in the 48-54 parts book is only listed for the Jet,
