Paul , I've had that problem when using a 6 Volt starter with a 12 volt system. Not sure of your set up.The other thing I ran into was the studs were bent. Also had the nuts on the back side
come loose. But you have had the starter out and most likely checked those.
I would say it's some sort of alignment problem. The front plates get bent if the through bolts loosen up. Good luck.

  • That top starter bolt has to be that speacial shoulder bolt/stud to make proper alignment. It can be done without one but its not easy ,

THANK YOU BOTH FOR YOUR COMENTS

I HAVE A 6 VOLT SYSTEM BUT THE TROUBLE STARTED AFTER I HAD A DEAD BATTERY AND WE JUMPED IT WITH A 12 VOLT JUMPER PACK
I WILL CHECK THE BOLTS ON THE OTHER SIDE I DIDN'T THINK ABOUT THAT AND I'M ALMOS SURE I INSTALLED SHOLDERED BOLTS WHEN I PUT IT ALL TOGETHER BUT THAT WAS 10 YEARS AGO I'LL CHECK IT OUT TOMMROW

THIS CAR HAS BEEN TOGETHER 10 YEARS WITH OUT ANY THING LIKE THIS EVER BEING A PROBLEM ???

Have the same problem. There are two fixed bolts, and one is loose( wobbles). That happened the same way as yours, when I jumped it with a12 volt. Big job to remove the bolts. Those are special bolts. The starter is on tight but moves a fraction and that causes the bendix to stick in the flywheel. Grab the fan belt to pop it out of the flywheel. Maybe someone here has a solution.
Oh, Paul know where I can get the airconditioned decal or sticker that is under the dash on the plastic cover for the airconditioner for a 56 Hudson?

I SENT YOU A MESSAGE ABOUT THE DECAL I HAVE THEM
  • If that is what has happened - that it shifted on the bolt. You should be able to move it back to where it was. After all as you said it was in the right spot till you jolted it with the 12 -volt battery pack. Loosen the starter bolt and put a small prybar behind the starter and push it out as you retighten bolt. It may not even visibly move but you dont need much,

  • I wouldnt think one incident like that would hurt it ,

An old trick to unstick the starter - put the car in top gear and rock it back and forth, emphasising the rear push. This turns the motor over backward and unmeshes the Bendix from the ring gear.
  • A few years ago the Bendix stuck on my 1950 Pacemaker. Couldn't figure how to unstick it. I posted my starter dilemma on this forum and someone suggested doing just like Geoff suggests here. Did the trick immediately and haven't had a problem since.

I just grab and turn the fan belt, and it just pops out.
