  • I dont claim to be an expert but if you read about the Hudson engineering folks they marched to a different drummer than most . They bought the cheapest lowest grade gas for thier test engines and designed and tuned them to run best on that. Knowing a lot of folks wlould do the same and thats why the car wont ping and knock under load , it just pulls on thru. this may explain something such as what you are seeing,

308, the behavior you describe is not correct for any Hudson I've ever had or worked on, including the '51 Hornet I have now. The vac advance doesn't come in until you're off idle. Maybe you've got a non-original carburetor. One thing that is a bit different from most cars is that the amount of vac advance is quite modest.
  • All have been stockers Park, you are correct on the amount of advance isnt much, about only 3degrees on most with the pacemakers around 7. I have also been changing that as well to around 10 by trimming metal from advance arm
  • Vacuum advance in all Hudsons is controlled by RPM. The carburetors are for Hudson's only. No advance at idle and advance increases by RPM's. All Hudsons have vacuum ports built in, and if you are drilling to get advance, you do not have a Hudson carb for your year. Spark advance started on Hudson's in 1940. Walt.

Excuse me....am I missing something here? Are we dealing with a new shorthand? What does "THG" mean?

Walt means that vacuum advance started in 1940. Mechanical (centrifugal) advance began well before that.

...so how is it that when someone posts "THG" everyone immediately knows he's got a question about pinging and pre-ignition? I need a manual for this new three-letter way of conversing, since I'm a man of few words!
  • OOPS ! Sorry guys,im new here and tryed editing my post and somehow erased it,heck I dont remember what I posted now,I got all new problems today,

My '49 262 knocked with too much basic advance.. then it cured it's self when my hearing went south. Joan told me there was a funny noise. I didn't hear it....It's amazing how quiet my new '49 8 is... with my hearing aids turned off.. LOL
  • Don't run it too long with that spark noise as you will burn a hole through one of the pistons/ Good way to ruin a motor. Walt.
