1933 tail light

Presume you are inquiring only about the "head" of the tail light and not the mounting stanchion which continually varied over years and body styles to mount the head to the sheet metal. Of course multiple lenses for the various models were used
The rimless style bucket was used on '32 through '36 Terraplanes and the '35 Hudson 6 cyl and all '36 Hudson cars. They are stamped brass and with age and heating and cooling in their environment, the brass tries to shrink and will inevitably crack.
On rare occasion an uncracked bucket can still be located. Good luck. You may save months or years by going ahead and repairing whatever you have being sure to fit the lens to the opening prior to finish chrome plating.0 -
Don't the forget the late '40's Willys Jeepster convertible uses that exact same tailamp. I think Willys found a OEM stash of the tailamps and decided they could use them on their new Jeepster!0

If that's so, they're currently available at Kaiser-Willys Auto Supply, at http://www.kaiserwillys.com/category/f/2653
Here's the original, though....does it look like the Jeepster one? Click on link to view.

INCORRECT about the Jeep lamp and its obvious. The Jeeps used a similar shape lamp but it has a separate rim that detaches to change the lens or bulb. The Terraplane /Hudson lamp is RIMLESS and you press in the lens to remove it.
If you don't have a tail lamp period, then the Jeep one is preferable to nothing.
Hope this file photo is adequate to show the rimless bucket. This bucket was missing the license lens when pic was taken and has a piece of clear tape over the opening.

The photo above is from a '34 Terraplane, the length of the stem gives it away.... I'm not sure about the rimless feature, I have both types, the one on my '33 may have been changed long ago,(prewwII) but it definetly has a rim on it.I will get a pic up later.....Either way, if you are looking for a nice replacement, especially if you want to "add" the optional passenger side, Jeepster is the way to go!0
-
Well excuse me but the picture I posted shows a '35 Hudson 6 tail lamp base. That base is longer than the '34 Terraplane standard, and totally different than the longer '34 Terraplane KU model.
But you are right, if this is not about trying to maintain authenticity, ANY tail light can be bolted or welded on. '56 Packards would give more visibility to the rear. Or Jeep lights.0 -
PIctures of a '35 are not much help either.Don't be a Knucklehead, Still out there. I have looked for tail lamps since I've owned this '33, and that was 1979. Still haven't found a right side lamp. Before you can come up with ridiculous statements as above, you need to know the Willys light is a direct bolt on, the same holes are used. And they certainly would pass all but the most critical eye....That in itself is helpful, as at least the car would be road and show worthy....Sorry if I offended you.0

If your looking for some pictures only, so you know what to look for? I think I can help.0

Boy, do I ever feel like a "Knucklehead" (I thought that ment that you liked old Harley Davidson's) When I was building my 36 I wanted the added protection of directional signals. (visibility in the old girl from the left side is not that great) I picked the 35 tail lights to add aditional brake lights and directional signals. These lights are aftermarked and was available about fifteen years ago. I just bolted them onto my bumper. I guess that means that it is no longer original?0
-
Hey Brownie! Beautiful car by the way. ...What is the story with the decorative piece just above your license plate? The piece that says "Hudson", what year, model, etc., is that original to?0
-
Have no idea my friend. I found that up in Idaho a number of years back and fell in love with it. It is a bolt on so I move it from one car to another. I did see one sell on Ebay about four years ago and the owner got $200 for it. That just goes to show what is ment by supply and demand? It most likely is a dealer add on item?0
-
Ok, my dad has one that we have kicked around the garage a few times. To me it looks like something that would be on a '38. It just looks '38 to me. But I think your right. Probably a dealer dress up thing that covered several years from the mid thirties to early forties?
Anyone know any more about it?0 -
I do have a right hand side 34-36 tail light

Quote 5433HET:
"Don't be a knucklehead, Still Out There" and later. "Sorry if I offended you."
Ya know, maybe if we knew what the heck you were after, just the tail lamp head, or just the stand for it, or the combination of both, and if you didn't call me a knucklehead and then try to apologize, I wouldn't have to be offended. But I am, like anyone would be when called a knucklehead in a public forum. I request that the moderator reprimand you for that.
I took it as you wanted to know about the "head" or the "bucket". I explained in my first post that this head /bucket IS THE SAME for your '33 and other models through '36. Then I provided a picture of THIS SAME BUCKET.
5433HET, if you can't comprehend good information being provided to you by someone with experience who has owned several of these car, if you are going to start name calling, then this good old family club HET forum is really a waste of time for both of us, isn't it?0 -
Okay, no need to start calling people knucklehead. Please be respectful of fellow Hudsonites. If you disagree with someone's statement please simply state that, and give your reasons.
Now, we seem to have established here (have we not?) that the Jeepster lamp housings are quite similar but not an exact match, right? Definitely a good "place holder" for the original, until the real thing comes around.0 -
I would have never thought but there are alot of us and spit happens. Even I have ruffled feathers in the past. I remember going to library to look for wiring diagrams to put my old plymouth together. There is an enormous amount of info on the Internet and some good and some that make you scratch your head, so far this web has been very helpful.0

If by any chance the 1935 Hudson taillight housings match the 1933 Terraplane ones, you might try this fellow: he has a set of '35's for sale in Ontario. I don't see a price listed. gwstorrey@sympatico.ca
