Headliner Help

Might be installing a new headliner in my 55 Hudson Rambler. Anyone have tips that may help? Or know someone in the Detroit area that is reasonable? The one quote so far has been $350.00 for labor.

    I've done them before. Allow 5-6 hours.Have lots of breaks.Remove the seats so you can move around.I'm sure there are instructions available on the net.
    Mark your bows to be sure they go back in the right place.
    I'd probably want $3-350 to do one again.But everybody should do at least one. LOL

    It's not that bad, and you'll learn something and have a sense of accomplishment. Just take your time and work from the middle of the car forward and back, trim carefully and tuck the edges in nice. A plastic putty knife will be usefull. Might want to shrink it when you're done with some steam from a teakettle. The wrinkles will tend to come out over time anyway.

    Of course, it's easier with the windshield and back window out.

    I agree that everyone should do at least one in their life. I did one in my hardtop and my brothers 50 sedan without taking the windows out. The temperature was in the high 80s with equal humidity. Makes you appreciate life after they are done. I also
    started to attended church more often. lol

    Instead of a tea kettle ,you can use a spray bottle with water and a hair dryer.
    Unless you're putting in a vinyl one.Than maybe just the hair dryer.
    I also did mine without removing the rear window.
    Again , just allow yourself time and take breaks.

    I'm taking the plunge. Headliner and windlace have been ordered from Larry Dennis [LDC] in texas. The labor costs were between 300.00 and 600.00. George said the good news is if I mess it up he can sell me a new one. The headliner and windlace cost 327.00 del.

    I am waiting for our nephew to install our ready made headliner from SMS auto fabric of portland org. and was wondering if there is any tips for this year of 54 Hornet Hollywood.
    It has 7 bows that hold the headliner in place. Thanks Hudsonly Ray

    I checked a couple of private upolstery places but they said 500.00 to 750.00 price range for labour to install. Ray

    It's done, a little scarey until you get the first bow inplace, after that a breeze. The replacement wing lace foam is different. The orignal has a extra rubber cord on it to glue into the channel. Some 3/8 square wood glued in nice and stapled the windlace to that. Larry Dennis has windlace for $4.75 a yard. Also recoverd the sunvisor by watching a lot of you tube. Next pulling the rear drums to check out the brakes.

    Your shops are on the high end. I had a 52 sedan done a few years back for $125. I will be doing my 54 coupe perhaps next summer. I was at the shop yesterday and helped my interior guy put the bows inside a 58 Ford coupe. We spend more time talking political issues than working but the installation of the bows was about fifteen minutes. Perhaps tuck and fit will take longer, but that was as far as I got.
