glass "bugs" for stepdown club coupes.
Can someone advise me where on the glass the date codes appear on the 48-53 coupes. I believe on the vent window it is low & close to the division bar. On the driver & passenger door behind the lock pulls, but I'm not sure where the codes are etched on the 2 rear back seat glass rollups. Who was the manufacturer of the side glass, LOF or PPG? Are the codes readable from outside on one side and readable from the inside on the other, or simply said there is no left or right side glass... Hudson side glass was the same on both the passenger and driver sides?

I recall reading that PPG made the glass for the rear window on the Jet. I dont know that it would mean they did all Hudsons in 53 but its a clue,

Thanks Roger, I have an original rear on the 53 Hornet, it is PPG Herculite. I was hoping that some one still has the original side glass and could verify the etched date codes, for stencils.0

On my '52 sedan, which has all original glass still in place, codes are behind lock pulls. If I remember correctly, on a coupe, the codes are located on the front of back seat roll-ups. You are correct, there is NO LH or RH. Codes read "backwards" on one side when viewed from outside of car, i.e., glass was the same on both sides of the car.
Don't know how to read the codes, but mine look like:
[PPG symbol] DUOLITE
AS2 12
SAFETY WINDOW
Where the "12" is used is on door windows. "22" is on the quarters.
On the windshield:
[PPG symbol] DUOPLATE
AS1 32
SAFETY PLATE
"SAFETY WINDOW" & "SAFETY PLATE" font is much smaller. Might be able to get a picture, can try tomorrow, if you want.
Bob Bitgood has had this etching done on his '49 convertible. You might want to touch base with him, as well.

All original equipment US auto glass has a "AS _" number on it. I'm not sure what year the federal law started requiring it. It is not there on my '34 Terraplane.
Your "AS1" means "American Standards, First quality" meaning the optical clarity and lack of distortion are first rate. AS was the highest automotive quality standard in the world.
You may have noted on the far right side of tinted and shaded windshields that there are two AS numbers. The lower part of the windshield with tint only will be AS!. At the beginning of the shaded top there will be a 1/4" horizontal line and above it will be AS2 or 3 depending on the darkness of the tinted shade.
The bugs are etched into glass on an assembly line of course. Each piece of glass lays on the line on whatever side of the glass. So the bugs all get applied on the "up" side. Thus once a controlling steel channel (door glass example) is added to the glass and it is installed, the bug will be on the inside of the car on one side and the outside of the car on the other side.0 -
That's great guys! I just had some LOFstencils made by Ray Nacewicz of Carleton Glass in Michagan for my Cadillac. He is on line. He does LOF and Ford script, however with a picture and measurement of the letter size, he can make any brand such as PPG. Russ, if at your leisure, could you post a picture with the distance of the logo lettering across the top? I will ask Ray if he able to reproduce that "bug" script. Ron Sotardi0
