I have just disassembled my '51 Hudson and found this stuff all in my rocker panels and kick panels. It is from the front all the way to the back. I think it may have been caused by field mice since the car was sitting on a farm for many years in Oregon. It looks like grey moss but it definitly is man made, sort of plastic or something. Have any of you experienced this. Check out the pic.

Thanks and Peace,

Chaz

  • Chaz, That is from mice or rats. I have seen it before in a 57 Chevy that I restored years ago. I think it is a combination of seat stuffing, insulation, and God knows what. That 57 also had a pack rat nest made of cactus pads on top of the motor when I opened the hood. I did a complete frame off of the truck and even after blasting, bodywork, and paint, I still would get cactus stickers in me while working on it. What memories.

  • Chaz.... that stuff at one time was a block of solid rubberized horse hair. Hudson used it to create noise reduction and dust and dirt penetration blocks. Looks like the critters pulled it apart some and redistributed same ... this is a common sight with cars that have become home to mini rodents...

I found some of what looks to be the same stuff in my passenger rocker panel as well. Caused the only rust on the whole car. Figured it was something from the old upholstery dragged down there by mice. (How the heck do they get inside the rocker panel?) Kind of like course steel wool, but plastic like. Made a hole about the size of a quarter, stupid vermin, now I can no longer call it a 100% rust free Hudson!

So Ken is there more of this stuff packed away in hidden places in our cars?
  • This nasty stuff is used throughout the lower body panels in stepdowns. The worst application is in the forward rocker panel up near the back of the front wheelwell just below the rear of the front fender. This crap holds moisture and will cause the front section of rockers to rot. Ever wonder why they all rot there? Well this is the main reason. When my car was rebuilt this tuff went into the trash.

Found that crap in mine as well. And rusted thru as well! Also found what looked like mattress filing in the outer frame rails, I'm sure brought by rodents! And the frame rails are rusted thru the bottom!
