Hudson 8

A bit confused.......adjusting valve lash issues. Is the Hudson 8 like the 6es as the exhaust valve is under the spark plug? With both manofolds on i am struggling to figure out which is exhaust and which is intake. I know this sounds dumb,but its not like the 6es where it is very obvious .

    I used to have a tune-up sheet or whatever, I think Jack Clifford made them up, that you could place by the right side of the engine which & it told you from the front or rear which each valve was.
    I'll have to see if I have one of those in my shop manuals & if so will scan it & post it either here or at the Hudson 8 website or both - hmm, give me something to do today as raining out!

    here's one for the 6 cyl. engines, couldn't find the one like this for the 8.

    I have factoy manuals from '34 on up + a lot of tech. bulletins, etc. the factory put out from '33 on. A former Editor used to put tech stuff in the WTN, ergo the reference to "Jack", referring to Jack Clifford - this is from a '78 WTN.

    As far as I know there are no charts for the 8 cyl motors, but you are on the right track - the exhaust valves are under the spark plugs.

    Thanks guys,should have wrote it down the 1st 2 times I did this job.When I did the Miss Daisy car it had a broken exhaust manofold so I adjusted valves with the manofold off and it made it easy to figure out whats up.

    I have an 8 in the garage with the valve cover off. I'll get a chart together for us. Kind of self--explanitory when ya get in there and I've done 3 of them in the last year.

    The valve arrangement is E I I E E I I E E I I E E I I E and the firing order 16258374. the procedure is to start with No. 1 exhaust valve open, and adjust it's opposite number (No. 8 Ex.) Then wind the engine over until the next exhaust valve is fully open (No. 6), and do it's opposite (No. 3 ex). Carry on until you have done all the exhausts and then do the inlets in the same order. Hope this is not too complicated explanation.
