What ball bearing to use in drive end of GDZ 6001B Autolite generator for 51 Hudson Pacemaker
I've been having charging problems and found that my generator is shot. I have a good used generator and I took it apart to inspect it. I find that the bearing on the drive end is non shielded and has the numbers 203 stamped on it. I think its the original bearing. Do I need to use a non shielded bearing to replace it so that the oil and grease can get into it? Is it ok to use a 6203 bearing in place of the one that says just 203? Can you remove the shield from a shielded bearing and make it into and unshielded bearing? Thanks for your help. Rob

Yes you couuld remove the shield if you like. However in theory if it has a seal on each side its lubed for "Life". Ive taken many electric motors apart that had grease fittings from the factory yet had sealed bearings installed. We had been gresing them needlesly,

Yes, you can use a double-sealed 6203. I presume you know the difference between a sealed and a shielded bearing? The rubber-sealed bearing is the best option, and is lubricated for life, so you no longer need to drip oil into the front fitting.0

Thanks for the info guys. I will go with the 6203 sealed on both sides0

True enough Geoff ,there is a hard to see differance in a shilded and sealed bearing. The shilded one will not have the actual rubber or plastic piece between the shild and the rotating inner cone of the bearing. The shilded bearing will have a tiny gap there ,

Thanks for the clarification on the difference between sealed and shielded. I knew there was a difference and that the shielded had metal sides and the sealed sides looked like plastic but I didn't know the details you have stated. thanks again. Rob0
