1956 Hudson Hornet LV

I started below post last week on 308 engine, however I now want to keep in one file...Didn't get the car indoors, but still started with engine/transmission which should be removed before this weekend, then we'll remove head and oil pan. Curious to learn, as this is my first '56 Hornet does anyone know what color engine and head was painted? After checking undercarriage, trunk, rocker panels and interior floors, I am happy with all mentioned conditions, however there is a dent in gas tank that requires attention; any recommendations is appreciated? Pictures of '556 Hornet engine, also years ago I purchased Black Beauty Hornet that had a '56 Hornet engine he and his son rebuild and ran great.

"Real cold in Las Vegas...I'VE BEEN WORKING ON '56 Hornet Twin-H; ENGINE TURNS OVER GOT SPARK HOWEVER ENGINE IS GOING TO NEED REBUILD, HAS VERY WEAK COMPRESSION BAD RINGS POSSIBLE FROM SITTING, BUT I Love Twin-H set-up. Have already rebuilt starter, distributor, new plugs and wires, if I can get space inside garage next week, we plan to pull engine and transmission, quick question, it it easier to remove hood before doing so or can we pull both engine and transmission without hood removal? I realize 1956 FOUR DOOR Hudson isn't most desireable car to restore, however if after engine and transmission rebuild, I may go forward or try and find a rust free step down? First things first, I know I'll have alot of questions and to all who answer, I'll say thank you in advance...Another concern is living in overheated desert, after I pull head, remove freeze plugs, any recommendations on water jacket, I have two cast iron and one aluminum heads and will order from PaulTooLarge grade 8 -1/2 bolts; more next week.

1ST OFF I'M NOT SO SURE YOU HAVE A 56 ENGINE ALL OF THE 55,56 ENGINES HAD A DUBBLE PULLY CRANK PULLY THE BLUE ENGINE DOES NOT HAVE IT ALSO I WOLD NEVER PUT FUEL HOSE ON THE CARBS I WOULD ONLY USE METAL TUBING
  • Thanks Paul, how can I confirm what engine is in '56 Hornet? I don't have the experience of Hudsom community members; but I never saw a blue painted Twin-H before, looks to me like 73,430 mileage could be correct?
  • 56 would have 1/2 " head bolts. check the serial number on the right top front corner of the block. does not look like a 56. Also 56 would be 12 volt.

  • Presently undecided, will know more after pulling engine tomorrow, already removed some chrome and stainless from front end; see pictures. Doesn't appear that engine was ever been opened or worked on and maybe 73,430 miles is correct?
Reference blue engine, a good friend and reliable source informed me it may be a J.C. Whitney crated engine, following are some numbers from head in car: looking at engine from block upper right side F9114 - then 308 and below 5325011...Other head I have and may consider using is cast iron H145 Super Power Dome 305854 and looks like dated 4/25/51 third 308 head I have has already been milled. Years ago when I purchased car, I was informed starter wasn't working well, had it rebuilt and from looks of flywheel car must have been hard starting and I'll probably look for replacement fllywheel.
Hope no major shock after pulling engine and head tomorrow? More at later date.

There is a date code cast in the block directly below the distributor when you can get to it.
The spare 308 that came with my 49 and that I am finishing now is stamped F 8697 on the deck surface and date coded April 14,1955. It was a new never run engine but poorly stored with the
head loose or off. Mine was painted gray but after a trip through the hot tank washer showed
a 'glyptal' type red inside and out everywhere except the machined surfaces. Hope to have mine running next month and wish you luck on yours.
