Japanese Hudson?

Wow! I’m ok with an updated drive train in a Hudson, (I guess I should be, I have one) but I think this one should have been left alone. What a fantastic Twin H ’53! Even the underside looks clean. Seems to have just needed a valve job and a starter. I wonder where the motor that was pulled went? Or at least the dual carb setup. Seems to be a Japanese site. (Ends in .jp?) Is there any way to translate the captions? Most of it just comes up as question marks in my Mozilla browser. Also can’t click on the pictures to make ‘um bigger. Anyway here is the link… http://www2u.biglobe.ne.jp/~WELBY/vintagecar/hudson/index.html

Well, I'm afraid my high school Japanese is a bit rusty, but...
Apparently the old engine went bad. After a year, the guy decided to install a 1992 Chevy 350 engine, but it seems he ran into obstructions from some of the body components. (Should he have?)
By the way, he has some stuff for sale (I think he's in Osaka):
/ Twin Induction Kit with Carter cab
/ Dual Range Hydramatic (4speed automatic trans) Good Used
/ 262 Power Dome engine parts
(Rebuild Water pump, Rebuild Starter,Tune Up kit,Flywheel,Cab oh kit)
It is 800 dollars in these all!
"I will send out foreign countries. To owner StepDown"
So... all you 'owners StepDowns' in or near Japan, grab your $800 and contact the fellow at HETwelby@mxu.mesh.ne.jp (remove HET first). But be sure to know your Japanese!
I hope Charlie Woodruff in Seoul, is listening!0 -
Translation:
[Completely, this car fact of the matter is bad,, You fall in love to the styling which unique about 1 is year ago and are densely with to purchase, it does not move at one time honestly but now is.]
My take on it is:
I guess from that I can pick out that this car is complete but bad. He fell in love with the styling a year ago but now has too much debt. It did run at one time but does not now. Best I can do with my limited ability to translate Japanese. NOW Spanish is different>0 -
If you go there and right click on the each title in english, and hit OPEN you get the whole story. Wow Is this intersting stuff. Looks like they burned a valve and wrecked the starter gear so they took it out and replaced it with the 350. Is this car showroom condition or what. Where did you find this.0

I found it while looking for pictures of a Hudson V8 engine bay. I wanted to see what colors they were using on the block and air cleaner. Also, what if anything was stenciled on the valve covers or air cleaner. (Packson? Huddard?)Somewhere on one of those pages it must say "Hudson V8", because it popped up during the search.
If I would have found it over Christmas break my daughter could have translated it as she reads/speaks Japanese. But she is out floatin' around on the USS Ronald Reagan right now. Actually they are supposed to be stopping in Japan sometime on this cruise, I wonder how much weight they are allowed to bring home?
It is/was a fine looking machine, eh?0 -
Surely they must have internet hookups on our aircraft carriers! I'll bet she could 'tune it in' and come up with a translation. I'm curious how the darn thing got over to Japan (maybe owned by someone in the military, stationed there...? Or a U.S. diplomat?)0

You can not import a car to Japan if it is NEWER than 1974, per Japan's emissions laws, which are stricter than US laws. People getting stationed in Japan are not permitted to bring a car into the country unless it's OLDER than 1974, so for all intents, they don't bring cars with them. Weird, huh? So, it may well have been brought in by a military member, a diplomat, or a Japanese car lover who bought it in the US.
You can, however, bring in certain Japanese cars into the US that were available originally here, for example, Nissan Bluebird (Z-cars), Toyota Celicas, Supras, and pickups, and others. Plus, Japan-spec cars are RIGHT-hand drive, too. Any car older than 25 model years old can be brought to the US, as the EPA and DOT eligibility window moves with the next model year. So, if you found a 1981 whatever that was produced for non-US-spec markets overseas, you can bring it home!0 -
We should try to recruit them into the HET Club! I notice there aren't any submissions for Japan in the roster. An entire country could be added to the book!0

Well...she has access to e-mail, but I think she said internet access is not available, or if it is its very limited. I don't remember, I'll have to ask again. I'm new at this "Navy Dad" thing and its her first trip at sea. It's also the Reagan's first real assignment, they say it still has that "New ship smell".0 -

Checked out the website... too bad they are not keeping the original drive train... well there may be reasons beyond what is posted...For the record... Bill A is one of the export dealers who has placed Hudsons in Japan... but there are others. In 1992 a friend was approached by a Japanese agent for a man who buys classic American Autos for export to Japan. After some negotiation my friend's very nice Hudson Hornet was purchased at the Pomona Swap Meet. The deal was completed the next day when the new owner and the agent arrived with Sea Going metal container to pick up the Hudson. This person later purchased several other vehicles including Hornet parts cars. The first vehicle was being purchased to be placed in the new owner's Movie viewing room... imagine the size of this fellow's home to have full size Hudson in the room... the owners goal was to watch movies from the front seat as if at an American Drive in Movie.0
