Center drive shaft mounting

I have had 5 stepdowns so far and have changed the drive shaft center bearing on all of them. Four of them were all the same and easy to change with the standard cushions and brackets. The 51 Hornet is different than all the rest. One cushion is offset to the left and the other slants down kinda normal. The brackets look like factory but I have never seen anything like this. Can someone tell me if this the correct mounting ?? Thanks, Richie.

  • My 54 is like the pictured one! While redoing mine ,I keep thinking ...this is a poor design and no wonder it failed??? Has any one redesigned this center carrier bearing??

Richy is the 51 your first automatic? the parts are the same but the assembly is different.

to both - have you had to change the bearings on them? or just the mounts? the mounts fail from the long term soaking in leaked oil coupled with the baking in exhaust heat. one replaced, they do hold up.

Nick, yes this is my first automatic. I didn't know that the automatics were any different than the sticks, learn something new every day. When I changed the bearings I changed the cushion mounts just to be safe. Thanks Nick. Richie.
  • The automatic had the offset design as well as tougher rubber in the mounting bushings. Red rubber in the automatic & black for standard. At this point all mounts you find are the harder rubber even though they are not red rubber. The idea was the automatic had the potential to put more tourqe on the bering mount,

Its in one of the books someplace - made sense when I read it. I dont think they maintined that for too long . Switching to all black hard rubber at some point Paul youre not wrong I have seen two numbers listed also (one right one left) indicating each side was different. Perhaps thy only did that on Hydromatics .Ill have to look it up,
